Chiefs held, but maintain lead

Maritzburg United held Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-1 draw at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night, but Amakhosi maintain their seven-point lead atop the standings.

Mario Booysen’s goal early in the second half threw the cat amongst the pigeons, but Mulumowandau Mathoho equalised with 20 minutes to go to ensure a share of the spoils.

Bernard Parker had an opportunity to put Chiefs ahead as early as the seventh minute from a free-kick, but his goal-bound effort was comfortably saved by Shu-aib Walters.

Itumeleng Khune was called into action in the 15th minute, parrying Heinrich Isaacks’ deflected shot when he switched direction to push away the goal-bound effort.

The Bafana Bafana captain again kept the scores level three minutes later with a spectacular save to keep out Ruben Cloete’s long-range effort.

Maritzburg took the lead just after the break when Chiefs failed to clear the ball from a set-piece and the ball rebounded off Morgan Gould and towards the goalline. As the defender tried to clear the ball it fell into the path of Booysen, who slotted home from close range.

With about 20 minutes remaining the league leaders levelled matters from a corner-kick – Mathoho rising highest to power home a header beyond the reach of a back-peddling Walters.

There were a few half-chances towards the end of the game - including Cuthbert Malajila just missing a cross for a sure goal - but the two sides settled for a point which not only maintains Chiefs’ seven-point lead (thanks to Orlando Pirates drawing away to AmaZulu), but also win the Q3 award.
