The Merseyside duo has been tipped to follow in the footsteps of Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City in recent years and visit South Africa and, though a final decision will only be made at the end of the month, Executive Mayoral Committee member Grant Pascoe is optimistic.
“You’re putting me on the spot, but I have to say the chances of both coming to Cape Town are very good,” he tells KickOff.com.
“We are very keen to have them here, though it’s imperative that we also get some quality time out of it as well. As you can imagine they don’t come cheap, so we want the best bank for our buck.
“We are adamant that we want the top names here like [Luis] Saurez and [Steven] Gerrard, not a second-string side. There will also be some social responsibility initiatives we would expect them to be involved in.
“But they have a huge commercial unit and ultimately the coach will have the final say on what suits his team best.”
Pascoe adds that, should they make the trip, Liverpool will either arrive in Cape Town in May for an end-of-season tour, or in August as they build up to the new English Premiership campaign.
