The South African women’s Under-20 team Basetsana is a just one game away from making history as South Africa’s first national women’s soccer team to qualify for a global competition.g
Basetsana travel to DR Congo this weekend with a 3-1 cushion from the first leg played at Caledonian Stadium a fortnight.
The Anna Monate-coached team needs any favourable result in the second leg in Kinshasa to win the qualifier and qualify for the World Cup to be held in Chile from November 20-December 7.
Fran Hilton-Smith believes the teenage team that has been in camp since Monday will rise to the challenge on Saturday afternoon.
“We have maintained the same team from the first leg and are going to Kinshasa to attack. We just need to score an early goal and maintain our defensive shape and communication at the back so that they don’t score.
“We have watched the video of our game from the first leg and have worked well on the areas that need to be improved.
“This is a really critical game for us that we have to win so that we achieve our dream of qualification. We cannot afford to let this go when we have worked so much to get so close,” Hilton-Smith adds.
Basetsana will travel to DR Congo on Friday with Augustine Makalakalane, the head coach of women’s football in the country.
The three scorers from the first leg Nothando Vilakazi, Tina Selepe and Lusinda Bowers are expected to continue with their form with Kylie-Ann Louw providing inspiration in midfield.
Nigeria will play Ghana in the other qualifier to determine the other berth allocated to C for the finals.
