Platinum Stars beat Black Leopards in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 13 March 2013 Time: 21:33

Despite an encouraging second half performance, Black Leopards could not prevent Platinum Stars from progressing to the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals.

A goal in each half from Tintswalo Tshabalala & Henrico Botes saw Dikwena walk away with the win, leaving all packed inside the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium devastated as the home side crashed out.

Leopards’ first half was not their best as they squandered possession with some wasteful passing, allowing the visitors to dictate matters, with only the brilliance of goalkeeper Azwindini Maphaha keeping them at bay.

The Leopards keeper was called into action as early as the third minute to produce a fine save to deny Tshabalala.

Leopards’ first attempt at goal came in the 17th minute as Mongezi Bobe let fly with a ferocious volley, but his effort failed to trouble the Stars goalkeeper.

The home side’s second effort came seven minutes later, but Brian Abbas Amidu’s effort was kept out by Siyabonga Mpontshane.

In the 30th minute Stars finally made their pressure pay as Tshabalala found the back of the net after latching onto a loose ball inside the box firing past Maphaha.

The start of the second half saw Leopards playing more promising football and pushing numbers forward, but in doing so they left themselves exposed at the back.

That meant in the 60th minute their task was made all that more difficult when Henrico Botes doubled Platinum Stars lead.

Leopards tried to fight their way back into the match, but were unable to get past the stubborn Dikwena defence.

Leopards starting XI: Maphaha; Dzaga, Xakane, Khoza, Manaka, Ramagalela, Monama, Munganga, Mabusela, Amidu, Bobe

Stars starting XI: Mpontshane; Mpeta, Mhlongo, Gumede, Mere, Mkhabela, Ng'ambi, Ngele, Tshabalala, Phala, Botes

Now the Thidiela boys should go back to training and fight for league survival. Dikwena will be sorted out later on Nedbank cup stages by the Phefeni boys . . . no stress
