PSL match report: Ajax Cape Town draw with University of Pretoria

Posted: 6 March 2013 Time: 22:09

University of Pretoria and Ajax Cape Town continued their winless streaks after the two sides played to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night.

Both sides were slow out of the blocks, but from the outset it was evident that the main battle of the night would be between the lanky figures of Mame Niang and Matthew Booth, who competed in the air for much of the evening.

Khama Billiat went close for Ajax in 24th minute with a sweetly hit free-kick but Washington Arubi was up to the task and tipped the ball out for a corner-kick.

Billiat went close again a minute later with another free-kick, just outside the box, which took a slight deflection and just passed Arubi’s right hand post.

AmaTuks, however, had the best chance of the half, when Thokozani Sekotlong played a curling ball into the box that reached Bongani Zungu, who shook off his defender and headed inches wide of Sander Westerveld’s goal.

Westerveld was then called into action, and produced a man of the match performance against Niang.

The Senegalese striker finally got the better of Booth in the 70th minute, timing his jump to perfection, but his header was well stopped by the Ajax keeper.

Niang had another chance four minutes later, when he lost his marker and headed towards goal, but he was brilliantly denied by a fully stretched Westerveld.

And the keeper denied Niang yet again in the 79th minute, after the striker beat the offside trap and hit a fierce shot across goal, with the Dutch international producing a superb save to keep the scores tied.

The result leaves Ajax in 15th position on the log while AmaTuks move up one place to eighth.
