Match report: Orlando Pirates beat Platinum Stars

Posted: 20 February 2013 Time: 21:28

Orlando Pirates have kept the heat on log leaders Kaizer Chiefs with a fortunate 1-0 victory over third-placed Platinum Stars on Wednesday night.

Dikwena were unlucky on the night, bossing possession and hitting the upright twice, but were undone by a Daine Klate goal soon after half-time.

Stars might have been in front half an hour in when Thuso Phala played a perfect pass for Mogakolodi Ngele, and with just Senzo Meyiwa to beat the Botswana star hit the post. Patrick Malokase picked up the loose ball, but his effort was wide.

Pirates were ahead on 53 minutes, however, and it was a well-worked goal. Thandani Ntshumayelo dribbled his way into the penalty area and played a low ball across goal, which was side-footed in from a tight angle at the back post by Klate.

Thabo Matlaba and Vuyo Mere could both have seen red after a nasty scuffle soon afterwards, but got away with yellow cards.

Enocent Mkhabela almost found an equaliser for Stars, his header from a corner had goal written all over it, but Meyiwa had his hands raised already and was able to knock the ball to safety.

Stars had the lion’s share of possession in the closing stages as Pirates sat back and tried to catch them on the break, with Siphelele Mthembu striking the base of the post with a fine turn on the edge of the area in the final seconds of the match.
