Mali beat Ghana 3-1 in the third place play-off at the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday

Mali beat Ghana 3-1 in the third place play-off at the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday night at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to win the bronze medal.

The Mali goals were scored by Mahamadou Samassa, Seydou Keita and Sigamary Diarra while Kwadwo Asamoah scored for Ghana.

The game started in a calm mood with the Ghanaians getting the better of the early stages as the Eagles took some time to settle.

Ghana did not trouble goalkeeper Daouda Diakite despite Mali’s slow start.

Mali got the opening goal in the 21st minute when Samassa dived in to head home a well-placed Adama Tamboura cross past goalkeeper Dauda, 1-0.

Wakaso’s came close to getting the equaliser but his shot was saved by Diakite to keep the Eagles in the lead.

The second half started well for Ghana as substitute Jonathan Mensah got on the end of a good free-kick from Wakaso heading narrowly wide.

Mali scored again in the 48th minute when Keita hit the ball past Dauda from Ousmane Coulibaly’s pass from the right, 2-0.

Wakaso was handed a chance to half the deficit a few minutes later as Salif Coulibaly was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box despite replays showing that the ball actually came off his chest. Wakaso hammered his penalty kick wide.

In the 82nd minute Ghana were back in the game when Asamoah halved the deficit. A hopeful shot from distance from the midfielder sneaked past Diakite who had clearly misjudged the flight of the ball, 2-1.

Ghana went looking for the equaliser but were punished on the counter attack as Sigamary Diarra added a third for the Eagles on the counter attack in the 92nd minute.
