Appiah: Back home pitches are much worse

Ghana coach Appiah says Mbombela pitch not too bad for Afcon semi-final

Posted: 6 February 2013 Time: 01:29 pm

Should Ghana fail to beat Burkina Faso in their Africa Cup of Nations semi-final this evening, the state of the Mbombela Stadium pitch will not be blamed, says Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah.

The Black Stars go in search of reaching a ninth Nations Cup final (they have won four) when they meet with Burkina Faso in Nelspruit this evening.

Much has been made of the uneven playing surface, after soil that was thrown down to counter a wet pitch that was apparently being threatened by algae.

But Appiah is not fazed by the condition of the Mbombela turf, where the Burkinabé have played all four of their games to date.

"You've got no choices, you just need to go out there and compete, whether the pitch is good or bad,” he says.

“When we get to the pitch, they're [the Ghana players] just going to walk around the pitch [to inspect the condition]. They're all professionals and back home, they'll go to pitches that are much, much worse.”

Appiah knows that his side are in for a real battle, despite their superior standing in world football to that of The Stallions.

"When it comes to West Africa, our style of play, our mentality is somehow almost the same. At this level, it takes the little things to be able to be successful,” he explains.

Well said coach unlike some players who blamed the pitch as if it was the first time in their lives playing on a pitch like that. BF played all their games there... i see trouble tonite unless Ghana do something spectacular. BF is my team of the tournament so far.

That Adabayor likes to play big, he stopped his teammates from taking a commercial airline, promising to chat private jet instead. Kuphi la, ike yafika no, they were stuck at the hotel. This reminds me of some team who have been promising to build own stadium for 15 years now...the municipality should simply take that land back and build houses instead.

mxm just because Appiah has just said what you want to hear.Ja nhe some people will always be fans of mediocrity. There was nothing wrong with Adebayor compalining about the pitch. For a tournament of such magnitude high standrds were expected .Adebayor was right.

We know we are good and we prepare ourselves everythime there's an event in Mzansi, people like Adebayor should be the least of our problems. Let him go back to his Europe while he still can, hopefully he doesn't comeback to PSL when his prime time ends that side.

SAFA made a blunder by taking the game to Mbombela but players need to be able to play on any surface. In England you will never hear players complining about heavy snow on the field of play. Not even Adebayor complains about that but he has the nerve to complain about sand. That's pathetic !

That Togo Captain makes as if he started playing football on the grass. But S.A.F.A should check facilities properly before signing agreements with municipalities. That Mbobela pitch is bad and they should do something.

Now this Guy has not reached semis by luck like Nigeria (ala penalties); a good coach knows that the pitch is but one out of many factors that can take the game, even the low altitude in Mbombela can be a decicive factor for the game since the Stallions have adapted to the conditions there... so big up to Mr Appiah for being an African, most of all for being Human.. unlike that crap of a person called Adecowyor!

The only disgrace here is the people who failed to adhere to their project management plans; any planning of the event has some sort of risk assessment and projections, so CAF and LOC are the disgrace here, not the pitch!
