Nigeria progress to AFCON 2013 semifinals after beating Ivory Coast

Posted: 3 February 2013 Time: 18:59

Nigeria shocked tournament favourites Ivory Coast 2-1 to progress to the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals in Rustenburg.

The Super Eagles took a first half lead through Emmanuel Emenike just before the break, but the Ivorians levelled on 50 minutes through Cheick Tiote.

However, Sunday Mba netted the winner 12 minutes from time for a sensational victory.

Elephants coach Sabri Lamouchi made eight changes from the team that drew 2-2 with Algeria in their last match, and it showed as Nigeria got out of the blocks faster, with Victor Moses firing in a shot on 10 minutes which Boubacar Barry parried to safety.

Emenike fired another shot over the bar on 27 minutes before their dominance was finally rewarded just before the break – the striker slotting a great free-kick after Moses was brought down just outside the area.

The Ivorians looked much better after the break and were duly rewarded just five minutes in when they drew level through Tiote, who headed in Didier Drogba’s free-kick at the back-post.

The Elephants kept up the pressure, though a warning sign of the Nigerian danger should have been forthcoming when Aide Ideye’s close-range headers was well saved by Barry.

Yaya Toure was put straight through and looked certain to score, but the excellent Vincent Enyeama was equal to the task.

It proved a crucial save as Nigeria scored the decisive goal just 12 minutes before the end – Mba beating three defenders before his deflected shot left Barry with no chance.

Ivory Coast through everything forward and had a number of chances, but just could not get the ball into the back of the net as the Eagles held on for a famous win.

Sigh of relief...... I knew Nigeria always does good when playing bigger opponents. If we can take every match as serious as this, i believe we'd do much better. Up Super Eagles.

Cote d’Ivoire 1: Nigeria 2

That the final score.
Nigeria to through to the Semi to play Mali.
A big congratulations to the players, the Keshi-lead coaching crew, NFF and to all Nigerians.
This is a big present to the people of Nigeria.

Before this match, a lot of my fellow countrymen criticise and wrote off the team.
If you are one of them, please this is the chance for you to change and be positive.
Always have faith in your own and the zeal to present your motherland in the best way possible no matter the situation.

God bless Nigeria!!!

I hereby write to tender my appology for not believing Nigeria can beat the star studded Ivorians. Supper eagle's DNA is back and we can go all the way to win the competition. I noticed some tactical changes which finally paid as Moses was move from right flank to the heart of the midfield to assist Mikel and others. Supper eagles gave them a shocker of their life.

Well done to the Nigerian super eagles. Personally I never gave them a chance coming into this. Tactically in the group stages Keshi did not inspire much confidence and there was a lack of team chemistry.

Something I need to get across here from a South African perspective. We Orlando Pirates speak fondly of our Nigerian counterparts. Why would we hate Nigerians? Why would we hate Nigerians when Williams Okpara wrote his name in gold in our hearts by being a key member of our squad that conquered Africa and delivered to us our golden star? Why would we hate Nigerians when one of our most trusted sergeants in the midfield that goes by the name of Onyekachi Okonkwo is a Nigerian?

In Onyekachi TICO Okonkwo our hopes in the up coming CAF Champions League adventure lies. He is the one that took us to the semi finals not so long ago by eliminating his boyhood love Enyimba. We celebrate this victory with our legend Okapara and our soldier Okonkwo.

Well done to the Super Eagles and Up The Bucs!!!!

Finally Keshi got it right.
Selection, Tactics, Team Spirit, Planning/Execution. Feels like the good old Super Eagles of the Nineties.
Congratulations Nigeria. And if we play Mali with the same grit, we will certainly paly in the final and if we play with yet again the same grit , we will be crowned Champions.
Keshi, please stick with the same team against Mali.
Finally ,we are getting it right

That's Nigeria for you... When you look down on them...
Played better and won...but is CAF serious?
They asked for $2.6million for transmission, for a trophy that worth less... Because Nigerians refused, the resolved to kick us out through their referees...imaging that Drogba's diving which resulted to the Ivorian goal...
CAF is busy training Nigerian team by building their hearths toward becoming one of the most stubborn team in future...
Never you bet against Nigerians... France had it, Spain had it, Bulgaria, had it. Today Cote de voire golden generation will surely start rebuilding as result of CAF over pam-paring...
