Gordon Igesund announces 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad

Posted: 30 December 2012 Time: 16:02

Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund went for experience when announcing his 23-man Africa Cup of Nations 2013 squad today at the Southern Sun Monte Casino Hotel in Fourways, Johannesburg.

The tournament runs from January 19 to February 10, 2013. The squad comprises players who have been part of Igesund’s national team set-up in the last six months.

Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune retains his place alongside Wayne Sandilands and Senzo Meyiwa, who took the place many expected belonged to Belgium-based Darren Keet.

Igesund has chosen seven defenders: Bongani Khumalo, who will captain the side, Siyabonga Sangweni, Anele Ngcongca, Tsepo Masilela, Siboniso Gaxa, Thabo Nthethe and Thabo Matlaba.

Slovakia-based Ricardo Nunes, who has been a regular feature over the past few matches, Siyanda Xulu and Bevan Fransman missed the cut.

In the highly contested midfield, Igesund went for the experience of Kagisho Dikgacoi, Dean Furman, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Oupa Manyisa, Siphiwe Tshabalala, May Mahlangu, Thulani Serero, Lerato Chabangu and Thuso Phala.

Those left out are Thanduyise Khuboni, Teko Modise, Daine Klate, Sifiso Myeni, Delron Buckley and, in probably the biggest surprise for many fans, Andile Jali.

The firepower upfront will be provided by Bernard Parker, Tokelo Rantie, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Katlego Mphela.

“It’s very unfortunate that I could not have all the players in the squad as CAF rules stipulate that only 23 will be needed for the tournament. No matter how much we try, we can’t please all the people in the selection process but I believe we have chosen the best that will represent this country well in Afcon 2013,” Igesund says.

“We had the best of the best in the camp, with excellent players competing against each other for positions but at the end of the day we had to cut down the squad to that stipulated by the governing body. However, those players who are not in the squad should not despair as they are all on stand-by in case of injuries.”

The coach thanked the South African public for their support of the national team and appealed for more support in the coming days.

“This is not my national team; I am just the driver, so I would like to thank the public, including the media, for their continued support of the squad that has been picked up as they represent all of us.

“We are now embarking on a long and difficult mission and we cannot do it alone, your support will be very crucial to see us through,” Igesund says.

“Now that the final squad has been selected, the focus is on the tournament. Real and hard work begins for all of us. I am now able to instil my philosophy and I am confident by the time the tournament starts, I believe we will be ready and playing as a unit.”

The first assignment in the new year for Bafana Bafana is the international friendly against Norway at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday, January 8.

The squad will gather late on Wednesday, January 2, in Cape Town to prepare for the clash against the Drillos.

In the second and last practice match before the Afcon, Bafana will face Algeria in another friendly at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, January 12.

South Africa begins their Afcon campaign against Cape Verde at Soccer City on Saturday, January 19, before facing Angola and Morocco in the group stages in Durban.

to have Gaxa,Ngcongca,Ntethe...whom r playing in same position and go with 2 central defenders is suicidal.....shud Ntsimbi got injured(hope not) we will b left with that useless Bongani Khumalo as the only recognised CB....why not drop one of the 3 RB cos we all know Matlaba is a good utility player........playing makishift centre back in a Major tournament is not we go abt living Jali and stick to KG whom we no is nvr good for Bafana....feel sorry for JALI. we all knw tht Masilela,Mphela,Seroro lack match fittness BUT GI decided tht they are good not gona tlk abt Tshabalala.....only Chiefs Fans know why he is a swallows fan bt decided to voice my opinion.why live fransman out?....not a fan of nunes but living him for furman wonder why cos he in no beta than jali and Teko.......

What did Thuso Phala do to deserve a place in the team? When Gordon 1st came to be the coach of Bafana he said selections will be based on the form of the players but he went and contradicted himself with some of his selections. Kilogram Dikgacoi always plays kak for the national team, the less said about Bongani Khumalo the better. Hard luck to Jali cause it's clear that Igasende hates this boy with a passion. He is easily the best midfielder in the country yet a certain white player who plays in the 3rd division of a league in the UK is selected. I have nothing against Serero and Masilela but they both come from long injuries, how did they warrant a place in the team. Hai voetsek man!!!!

7 K Chiefs players according to my calculations. If it was not because of injuries we cuold have 9 K Chiefs. Iyo yo yo. That's Chiefs I know. Like it or not.

For starting line up of the 19th. 6 of Amakhosi will stast the game, another achievement.

It means that our game VS sundowns will have to postponed. That's a fact. Sorry Gould and Mathoho, you will represent us in Brazil.

Khosi 4 ever.

I used 2 think Igesund ws gna b da 1 who wl make things happen fr bafana bt seeing dat He is suffering frm da same sickness which made pitso achieve notng wit bafana n currently makng zeca masimba kill our beautiful Birds, which is biased selection., I am convinced dat soon I wl b celebrating bafana's failure in da early stages of da afcon as much as I wl be celebrating swallows' loss in every game dat dey wl play under dat Zeca Mafundane. Soccer has just became very boring as a result of certain individuals. Why select furman, chabangu, serero n to my surprise phala over da General. Y does serero come straight frm injury into bafana b4 making it bek to da 1st team at Ajax Amsterdam? Why is furman, kg n khumalo even part of da team? I am dissapointed in Gordon n He cn kiss his job goodbye after da afcon coz He wil struggle to beat even cape verde wit da blunt cows He selected. Up da Birds....after Zeca' axing

Bongani KHUMALO PAOK (Greece)-he doesnt desreve to be in the team let alone be captain

Thuso PHALA Platinum Stars-Segolela, Lebese, Klate and Myeni a far better than this cow, Gordon must have been thinking with his balz to select him

Dean FURMAN Oldham Athletic FC (England)-Is this player really better than The Lion King Jali? It pays to be white sometimes...

Lerato CHABANGU Moroka Swallows-Teko Modise is far better much better than this drunkard, hai Gordon mara senzeni na??

Tshepo MASILELA Kaizer Chiefs-What did he do to deserve a place in the team? Really now, are we that dumb to overlook such rubbish selections?

Thulani SERERO Ajax Amsterdam (Holland)-Recently came back from injury but he gets the nod ahead of players who have been on form.

Siphiwe TSHABALALA Kaizer Chiefs-We are still paying for the opening gola of the 2010 Worl Cup.

Senzeni na Gordon mara ye!!!! hai suka!!!!

In the goalkeeping dept, there are no complaints. In midfield, I WILL ASK THIS QUESTION 2 bloggers: is the KG and Furman midfield-pairing BETTER THAN Yeye and Jali pairing?? I WOULD PICK JALI & YEYE ON ANY DAY!

jali and Teko vele did not deserve to be in the aquad . One is already old ,he plays in drips and drabs and disappear most of the time and the other has a big chip on his shoulder ,taking dives ,faking injuries ,fighting referees . Let him watch futbol from the stands . This will help him refocus and play the way he used to play with Manyisa . The boy is a bit big headed

Defence: not enough specialist centre-backs. Nthethe lacks international experience should he have to play in the middle.
Midfield: Jali should be there, full stop. And possibly Myessi. Tshabalala should not. Phala perhaps lucky to be included.
Strikers:Very good.
Overall, I'll give Gordon 80% - this squad does give me some hope...

Strikers m happy abt em they r da guys who r bangn the goals soo far so no else deserves to be de aprt frm those guys.

Good luk to the boys make us proud. The key for us to progress in this tournamnt wil be our central midfielders if gordn becomes a chickn n ply dean n kg at the same tym dn we wnt progress.

Id also like to see the combination of killer n parker upfront with parker being his usual self plyn bhnd the striker.
