Danny Shittu recalled to the Nigeria squad ahead of next month's African Nations Cup

Posted: 21 December 2012 Time: 21:27

Defender Danny Shittu has been recalled to the Nigeria squad ahead of next month's African Nations Cup.

But striker Osaze Odemwingie has been ignored in what could signal the beginning of the end of the West Brom forward's international career.

Also out is left back Taye Taiwo, who has also been overlooked since a Nations Cup qualifier against Rwanda.

Shittu has not been involved with the Super Eagles since Samson Siasia's last game in charge, a friendly against Ghana in which he was called up as a back-up.

But with recent defensive frailties, Stephen Keshi has called up the 32-year-old to bolster his defensive options.

However, with a surfeit of attacking riches, Keshi appears to have decided against the outspoken Odemwingie.

The squad is composed of 14 domestic league professionals and 18 from the foreign legion.

The squad will be led by skipper Joseph Yobo, who has appeared five previous tournaments from 220 to 2010 and is Nigeria's record international player with 89 caps.

All 16 participating countries have until midnight of January 9 to submit their final list of 23 players to CAF.

NFF executive committee member Barrister Chris Green explained that 14 home boys will travel to Portugal to be joined by 10 overseas-based professionals for the clash with Catalonia on January 2, with the remaining eight foreign-based stars to link up with the squad on January 4.

Goalkeepers: Vincent Enyeama (Maccabi Tel Aviv, Israel); Austin Ejide (Hapoel Be’er Sheba, Israel); Chigozie Agbim (Enugu Rangers, Nigeria); Daniel Akpeyi (Heartland FC, Nigeria)

Defenders: Elderson Echiejile (FC Braga, Portugal); Juwon Oshaniwa (Ashdod FC, Israel); Benjamin Francis (Heartland FC, Nigeria); Joseph Yobo (Fenerbahce, Turkey); Efe Ambrose (Celtic FC, Scotland); Solomon Kwambe (Sunshine Stars, Nigeria); Azubuike Egwuekwe (Warri Wolves, Nigeria); Danny Shittu (Millwall FC, England); Kenneth Omeruo (ADO Den Haag, Netherlands); Godfrey Oboabona (Sunshine Stars, Nigeria)

Midfielders: Mikel Obi (Chelsea FC, England); Nosa Igiebor (Real Betis, Spain); Ogenyi Onazi (SS Lazio, Italy); Raheem Lawal (Adana Demirspor, Turkey); Obiora Nwankwo (Calcio Padova, Italy); Fegor Ogude (Valerenga FC, Norway); Reuben Gabriel (Kano Pillars, Nigeria); Rabiu Ibrahim (Celtic FC, Scotland)

Forwards: Ahmed Musa (CSKA Moscow, Russia); Emmanuel Emenike (Spartak Moscow, Russia); Brown Ideye (Dynamo Kyiv, Ukraine); Victor Moses (Chelsea FC, England); Uche Kalu (Rizespor, Turkey); Bright Dike (Portland Timbers, USA); Shola Ameobi (Newcastle FC, England); Ikechukwu Uche (Villarreal FC, Spain); Ejike Uzoenyi (Enugu Rangers, Nigeria); Sunday Mba (Enugu Rangers, Nigeria)

I wish Onyekachi Apam was invited but all the same , good-luck to SE. I hope Yobo rises up to occasion because i'm yet to be convinced with his defensive abilities ( especially with SE )......... always making catastrophic mistakes. Good-luck to Naija once again.

How wish Onyekachi Apam, Chinedu Obasi, Joel Obi and Osaze Odenwingie were on the list . If wishes were horses , beggers would ride. I wish the super eagles the very best of luck in South Africa . Go Eagles go !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The list is not bad...............except Rabiu Ibrahim......Haruna Lukman would have been better.. I understand Osaze is excpecting a baby soon which might delay his coming to camp on time. As for Martins, he did not impress the coaching crew when last he played in the friendly match in the USA. Taiye Taiwo style and bite that is known for has diminished. Anyway, I wish the team the best!!

@ Game147 & Luis-hero. KESHI's list is out.

My criticism of KESHI is based on facts, not on sentiments. This guy is about to do sink the hope of our national team doing well in ANC with his proposed list of foreign-based players to invite for the tournament. Who in their right mind invites Bright Dike & Onazi to the Super Eagles camp at this phase of ANC preparation. Kayode Olarenwaju is by million-miles a better player than Dike. Players like this should have been given a chance to stake their claim in the team, same applies to Ezekiel Imoh, Leon Balogun, & Lukman Haruna. If KESHI had invited these guys, competition for positions would have intensified. These will insure that KESHI had explored the talents available to the our team. At this moment, an ideal team for Nigeria or possible candidates are:

Updated list:
Abundance of talent is one thing, but having a team is a whole different case. Nigeria will ONLY have a formidable team if Keshi chose his team based on merit. Based on the list released this morning, the Ideal Nigerian's ANC team:

1.V. Enyeama, 12. A. Ejide, 23. C. Agbim

20.K. Solomon, 16.K Omeruo, 3.U. Echiejile, 19. J.Onushiwa, 2.J. Yobo, 5.E. Ambrose, 6. D. Shittu, 13. A. Egwueke (S. Okonkwo if he fails to proof himself since Omeruo can play center-back)

7.A. Musa; 11.V. Moses; 15. I.Uche

Midfielders (Defensive)
12. F. Ogude; 4.G,Reuben; 22.O.Nwankwo,

Midfielders (Central/Holding)
10.O. Mikel;14.E.Igiebor; 21. Raheem Lawal (or Rabiu Ibrahim);

8.B. Ideye; 9.E. Emenike; 17.K. Uche; 18.S. Ameobi

S. Okonkwo (good & strong defender, might be a better option in the R. full-back since he is experienced)
E.Imoh (Fast rising star, & deserves to be given a chance)
O.Nsofor (good player, but needs to be evaluated under the new Super Eagles system to determine his fit)
Kayode Olarenwaju (very promising talent that warrants an immediate look-in, SEs can boost this guy confidence & bring out his potential)
D.Adejo (good defender, but needs to gain international experience at national team level)
C.Ogbuke (Experienced player, could snick into the last list)
Sa.Ameobi (Very promising talent, but needs time to mature into a great talent. CAP him immediately after ANC bcos he is target for England, but with his brother on our side, we have the upper hand to CAP him)
J.Chibuike (promising talent, could be a surprise inclusion)
G.Oboabona (Very questionable player, gives wrong passes that results counterattacks on our defense)
S.Aluko (good player, but he is down the pecking order in his position)
L.Balogun (would be a great pick-up, available without need for FIFA clearance)
O.Onazi (Need more experience & not a regular in Lazio)
S.Sam (Not yet cleared by FIFA & has injury)?

G. Oboabona is not SEs material
O. Onazi is not ready for SEs yet
B.DIke is not a SEs material & has no place in SE's team (?????????????????--can someone convince me that KESHI should be allowed to continue as head coach of Nigeria since he thinks Dike is better than Martins.)
O.Apam exclusion is understandable because he is NO where fully fit, and I was not impressed with his defending in the recent games that I watched)
D. Shittu's inclusion makes sense because he deserves a look-in since he has been playing regularly and in-form.
R.Ibrahim is a complete wild-card, we do NOT know about this guys capability since he was not even considered for U23 team. We should not advocate for his inclusion solely based on U17 championship in 97. He needs to prove a lot to be considered in this team because this guy does not make Celtic bench for goodness sake. WHY is Haruna not considered?

Haruna deserves to be in this team. He is in-form and plays for Dynamo Kiev as a starter.

Uzoenyi looks very likely to be picked for ANC since there are only 3 guys that are attacking midfielders in the team.

I'm done following this debacle KESHI is subjecting Nigeria to because pooling these last minute inclusions and some below quality players in the team justifies my stance that he will continue to experiment "REBUILD" our team in a major competition. This is a DISGRACE, UNPROFESSIONAL, & NON-PATRIOTIC of KESHI.

@denonso1, Bro, i aint got nothing against you. The meaning of my utterance is deeper than you comprehended. So many people have their reservations against Keshi and his style right from the day he was appointed ( of which i'm among them ) . The point i'm making is that Keshi has come to stay and so far he has the right to brag ( logically ) , we need to support our coach and the team. Resolving not to support Goodluck Jonathan because you prefer Buhari is rather unpatroitic. Your views remain valid anyway.

@denonso1,,i understand your point quite alright ,but we can do nothing about it for now
keshi was the former green eagles captain under westerhof of which i authoritatively believe he knows the desperation and the expectation of all Nigerians when it comes to football issue
i formally go against every move he makes in the past most especially using only home-eagles to play important matches ,,,
but 4now i totally support him fully and i want him to succeed
he is a great chap,,with an open mind
i could have love to see osaze ,martins and apam on the list
the coach knows better good-luck to him

Keshi oh Keshi. Rabiu Ibrahim is on the list and Sone Aluko that has been the best player in the English Championship which can rival even the French League aside PSG, Lyon and Merseille is not on the list. What a joke!

Good Shittu is in but Rabiu has not even played for Celtic in any league and Champions league match this season. I bow for Keshi oo. Bright Dike is on the list and Osaze is not. Keshi Keshi. Ejike Uzoenyi on the list and Sone Aluko is not.

To be honest, some may call me unpatriotic, but I wish we get kicked out early so Keshi can be fired cos he is a corrupt coach and does not pick based on form like Siasia. Apam omitted with some crap local players on the list.

Can you compare this boy Aluko to Raheem Lawal, Onazi, Rabiu Ibrahim, Reuben Gabriel & Ejike

copy and paste http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbvRgJyW__k

When Rabiu Ibrahim was not even gettting onto Celtic's bench, Aluko was destroying Celtic's team single handedly for Rangers. I bow for Keshi for leaving out best player in English Championship for last month and the only free kick taker we have now.

Good Luck to all the players , let them all put their best so we can bring the Cup to Nigeria
posted: 06:55 am
You have a point for Aluko not included, i watched his youtube records and he is such an impressive player.I want Keshi to call this guy right away and sacrifice a home base player for that.We need a free kick taker and this Aluko is a plus in that direction, he is also fearless and can take any defender one on one.Nff should help advise keshi to pick this guy.As for osaze, no body should cry for him.He is too arrogant to be supported by any fan.Yes he is expecting a baby but which is the best, making a name for himself and family by winning Afcon or giving stupid excuses for not coming to camp early?.Ogude left his wife and family and reported to camp immediately after the birth of his first child, why cant Osaze follow the rule for onces?
posted: 07:58 am
Unless there are availability issues or other matters we dot know about, I don't see why ejike uzoenyi should be ahead of sone aluko. Aluko would definitely have increased our attacking options in the wings. I still marvel what Kalu uche has done wrong or are there things unknown to the public?

With the number of chances ejike has had, playing him again and again is like cracking a stone to open. Super eagles stuff is not in him. If it's in you, it should not take you more than 2 or 3 matches to break into the team and make your Mark.

I wish keshi the best

@Anonymous 01:45am I agree with you ....what a strange selection made by Keshi.
Looks like 90% of those selected are based on egunje (bribe) which confirms what Westerhof said about players selection for Eagles.
posted: 08:32 am
with this list KESHI wants big, tall and imposing players. and players who would chase and retrieve ball when they loose it. plyers that can assist in defending. defenders that can attack and would not l4get his role as a defender. but 2 very vital and technical players were left out. Aluko and Lukman Haruna. oh my goodness. these would hv made any other countries list. name them.

after ANC pls consider them along with Adejo, Sunny Stephen, Aluko, Haruna, Odibe micheal, Leon Balogun, Sammy Ameobi, Sidney Sam
