After being absent from the scene in 2007 due to the nationwide industrial action by civil servants, the popular Kay Motsepe Cup, the world’s richest soccer tournament at school level, is back in full swing and this weekend promises to sizzle with action.
After claiming the number one spot in the Coca-Cola Football Stars a few weeks ago, Cloetesville High from Stellenbosch, has made it their mission to sweep clean all silverware on offer.
The tournament, the brainchild of the Motsepe Foundation and created to keep the memory alive of the late Mrs. Kay Motsepe, mother of Mamelodi Sundowns’ chairman, Patrice Motsepe, is run under the aegis of the newly-launched South African Schools Football Association [SASFA].
More than 55 000 football loving youngsters participate in this tournament that carries a first prize of R250 000. The runners-up win R200 000, while third and fourth spots pick up R175 000 and R150 000, respectively.
Cloetesville look the favourites in this fight to take the spot to be the Western Cape representative on Saturday at Beaufort West’s Rusdene Stadium.
They will play on a round robin basis against new comers to provincial level, Steenberg High and the locals Bastiaanste High who are sure to count on their home ground support.
A further 2 300 km away, the battle for supremacy for the Mpumalanga leg will be hard fought between the defending champions Sozama of Middelburg, Masizakhe High from Greyten, Gedlembane from the rural Pienaar and Madizi High from Bushbuckridge.
The four meet at Mhluzi Stadium in what promises to be a thriller.
The winners in the two provinces will join Harmony High Academy of Free State and SA van Wyk of Northern Cape, who are hard at training in preparation for the national playoffs scheduled for July 9 12 July either in Rustenburg or Mamelodi.
