Bloemfontein Celtic are the 2012 Telkom Knockout champions after they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.
Joel Mogorosi scored the only goal of the game just after the break – albeit in controversial fashion – to hand the Free Staters the trophy, and once again deny Teko Modise silverware.
Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens went with the attacking approach of Richard Henyekane and Eleazar Rodgers up front, but it was his midfielders who posed the biggest threat to Celtic early on.
Temba Zwane and Teko Modise both had shots on target from the edge of the area, with the latter’s requiring a fine diving save from Patrick Tignyemb.
However, it was the Free State team who came closest to the opener when Lennox Bacela was played through on goal after a defensive slip, only for Wayne Sandilands to save at his feet.
Henyekane and Zwane tested the keeper again, but the best chance of the half fell to Ruzaigh Gamildien on 30 minutes. A poor clearance dropped to him on the edge of the area but, after beating one defender, he dragged his shot inches wide of the upright.
It took just two minutes for Celtic to break the deadlock in the second half – and the goal came in controversial fashion.
Sandilands missed a cross from the right and the ball fell to Mogorosi, whose first-time header looked to have been cleared off the line by Clayton Daniels. The goal was awarded though, even though replays suggest the whole of the ball did not cross the line.
Four minutes later and Celtic almost doubled their lead when a lightning quick counter-attack saw the ball played to Gamildien, but his left-footed drive from the edge of the area went inches wide with the goalkeeper beaten.
The introduction of Anthony Laffor from the bench seemed to spark Sundowns into life, and they almost drew level from Modise’s long-range volley, which sailed just wide.
Laffor then played an excellent cross from the left which Tignyemb did well to pumch clear, before the Liberian went on a mazy run which saw him beat three defenders, but then shoot straight at the goalie.
Celtic almost made sure of the points in injury time, but Mogorosi’s shot came back off the upright. Nyasha Mushekwi then dragged Downs’ final shot wide as Celtic celebrated their first piece of silverware since 2005.
