Anthony Laffor scored late on to rescue a 1-1 draw for Mamelodi Sundowns against AmaZulu – but it was not enough to move them off the foot of the table.
Andile Khumalo had given Usuthu the lead against the run of play 13 minutes from time, but Laffor was on hand to save the Brazilians’ blushes at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Downs had a great chance to open the scoring on 18 minutes when Eleazar Rodgers was put through on goal, but Philani Zikalala pulled off an easy save.
AmaZulu had a few opportunities after that – Ayanda Dlamini beating a few defenders before a great challenge by Doctor Mampuru, before the striker fired over after a great cross from Tsweu Mokoro.
Laffor had two half-chances early in the second half, but it was Usuthu hit a shock opener – Clayton Daniels’ blunder allowing Dlamini in on goal. The striker teed up Khumalo, who made no mistake.
However, Downs hit back through Laffor, who tapped in Punch Masenamela’s cross, but they could not find the winner they so desperately needed.
