Serero sustained a groin injury in a League match against ADO Den Haag in September and there was doubt he would make the Afcon squad.
However, there is a glimmer of hope now.
"I will have to go see how he is doing, but he is back at training… It is not heavy training, though," Bafana coach Gordon Igesund confirms.
"I mentioned Serero, but I could have mentioned six or seven more names; there is Serero, Morgan Gould, Davide Somma, Daylon Claasen, Benni McCarthy, Katlego Mphela… there are so many. Some of these players are just coming back from injury," he says.
However, Igesund has cautioned that no-one is guaranteed a place in his team.
"They've got to now start playing for their teams and on top of that, they must start playing well to be considered. So I have to keep monitoring these players," he adds.

GI can deliver but he needs that injury list to clear up first.
Mosixty: what has Serero achieved in his career in terms of accolades, playing abroad is easy as long as u have a smart agent. He might be a good player but he is struggling to even break into the starting eleven in a youthfull team of Ajax.
In the case of Jali, Mike Makaap did mention that Jali is not ready to go abroad but there a number of teams desperate for his signature.
