Last year's winner Yaya Toure heads a list of candidates for the 2012 African Footballer of the Year award, which will be announced next month, the Confederation of African Football in Cairo said.

Toure is joined by former winner Didier Drogba and another Ivorian Gervinho on the 10-man shortlist.

Newcastle United striker Demba Ba, Chelsea's John Obi Mikel and the former Arsenal midfielder Alexandre Song ensure a strong representation of players who competed in England's premier league during the year.

But Toure and Drogba are likely to find their toughest challenge for the award comes from French-based Younes Belhanda, the Morocco international who proved the key player in Montpellier's unexpected Ligue 1 success earlier this year.

Of the Zambia squad that won a surprise African Nations Cup title in February, only captain Chris Katongo made it onto the lost, which will be cut to three before the award is handed over in Accra on December 20.
