Mphela, who was a regular under former coach Pitso Mosimane and has scored 23 goals for the national team in 47 appearances, has not played for Sundowns this season because of injury.
Igesund, who today names the squad that will face Zambia on November 14 in the Nelson Mandela Challenge, says the fitness levels of players will influence the selection of the squad that will represent South Africa in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
"There are still a lot of players that have a chance of making the final Afcon squad," Igesund tells KickOff.com.
"Injuries are part of the game, but we cannot close the door on any players yet. Mphela is now training so this is a positive development.
"There are also some players that picked up light injuries such as Thulani Serero, Benni McCarthy, Siboniso Gaxa and Morgan Gould, and we have been monitoring their progress as well."
