Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund monitoring Katlego Mphela's fitness

Posted: 5 November 2012 Time: 08:21

Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund is keeping an eye on the progress of Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mphela, as well as other players forced to the sidelines because of injury.

Mphela, who was a regular under former coach Pitso Mosimane and has scored 23 goals for the national team in 47 appearances, has not played for Sundowns this season because of injury.

Igesund, who today names the squad that will face Zambia on November 14 in the Nelson Mandela Challenge, says the fitness levels of players will influence the selection of the squad that will represent South Africa in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

"There are still a lot of players that have a chance of making the final Afcon squad," Igesund tells KickOff.com.

"Injuries are part of the game, but we cannot close the door on any players yet. Mphela is now training so this is a positive development.

"There are also some players that picked up light injuries such as Thulani Serero, Benni McCarthy, Siboniso Gaxa and Morgan Gould, and we have been monitoring their progress as well."

On a good day, this man can deliver. He has done it before...when we thought it was all over.He did it when we beat Egypt 1-0,at home. He did in the confederation cup, remember the cracker/goal he scored. He has also saved Pitso on several occasions, he would do it even when we all call for his substitution. All he needs is a good partner and his killer instict back, and a defence that lets no goall in. A good balance is what a makes a good team

He's the best thing we ever had. His strike rate for BB is amazing (1 goal in every 2 games), even better than of messi for argentina.
NOTE: i'm nt saying he's better than messi.

this is like building a house on a sand: Mr Coach, Benni, Nomvethe, Mphela, Gould, Gaxa....might not be physically fit for the AFCON, not taking anything from the players but you can't focus on the injured and recovering players: even Downs is not taking about Mphela, how ironic it is, for the national squad (Igesund do you understand what national team is?...akuyona i-team from ekasi where some players can play even if they are injured: This coach is ageing and lento yakhe is getting into my nerves....please don't reserve places for the players whom you are not 100 percent that they will be okay for the competition:
