Maritzburg United beat Chippa United in Cape Town

Posted: 5 October 2012 Time: 21:52

Maritzburg United moved up to joint second on the log when they beat Chippa United 1-0 at Athlone Stadium.

Philani Zulu scored the only goal of the game for the Team of Choice, who started the match well and dominated the opening 45 minutes.

Terrance Mandaza shocked Chippa when he stung the side-netting of goal in the 22nd minute, before Kassaly Daouda had to rush off his line to push the ball away from Maritzburg’s last man.

All the pressure was coming from the visitors when Mandaza tried to turn in a swinging header just after the half-hour mark.

Their continued pressure finally paid off in the 35th minute – Zulu latched onto a perfect cross to volley an effort towards goal, and a wicked deflection off Gift Sithole left Kassaly helpless to keep it out.

The second half was not much of a spectacle, with Malajila coming closest with a header on 75 minutes.

Chippa’s inability to get a hold of the ball saw them grow increasingly frustrated, and they were guilty of some reckless tackles, but it was Maritzburg who ended with 10 men when Mthokozisi Yende was shown a second yellow just before the end.

Still, the visitors held on to move into third with 16 points from seven games, while Chippa remain stuck in the relegation zone.

Some people will say I'm insane but I see Maritzburg United as a big threat to our league championship defending. The reason is that they have quite an experienced bunch of players in their squad. Bucs for ever.

I admire Mr. Mpengesi for what he has achived in a short space of time. The rags to riches story. but for him to come out and say he gonna win the PSL championship that alone is arrogance. What he said put a lot of pressure to his charges. Teams like Tucks who wished to atlist retain the PSL status r doing well with less pressure. But sometimes I blame the media for giving Mr. Mpengesi too much attention resulting in him uttering things he should never said
