Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund says it took all of 10 minutes for him and his technical team to make up their minds on Ricardo Nunes, the newcomer in the national team.
Igesund says he met with Thomas Madigage and Serame Letsoaka – his first and second assistant coach – to watch tapes of European-based players they hoped to rope into the Bafana team, and he says they were hugely impressed with Nunes.
"Ricardo Nunes is a very exciting player. I have watched three or four tapes of him and my technical team, Tommy and Serame, have done a magnificent job.
"We were at my house until two or three in the morning watching DVDs and we had Nunes' tape on for 10 minutes and they said to me, 'We have seen enough coach'.
"He is a left-back and very attacking. He is also a specialist free-kick taker … he is an exciting player. He warrants a bit of attention," Igesund says.
Nunes currently plays club football for MŠK Žilina in Slovakia, but he started out in Benfica's youth set-up in 2002.
The 26-year-old was born in Johannesburg, but he is regarded as a Portuguese player, having lived in the European country from a young age. He played for Portugal at Under-17 and -18 level, but is now eligible to play for South Africa.
