Bafana squad to be announced today

Posted: 2 October 2012 Time: 08:35 am

Gordon Igesund will announce the Bafana Bafana squad today at 1pm – who do you want to see in the team?

Bafana will play Poland on Friday, October 12, and Kenya on Tuesday, October 16.

Which players impressed you in the friendlies last month, and who would you like to see called up again?

Igesund will be unable to pick Thulani Serero, Morgan Gould or Siboniso Gaxa, as they are out injured, while Teko Modise and Reneilwe Letsholonyane look to be out of the running with minor niggles.

The coach has admitted the injuries to key players are a major concern for him.

Igesund first Bafana squad, picked for the recent friendlies against Brazil and Mozambique, was:

Goalkeepers: Wayne Sandilands (Mamelodi Sundowns), Moeneeb Josephs (Orlando Pirates), Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs)

Defenders: Siyabonga Sangweni, Thabo Matlaba (both Pirates), Bevan Fransman (SuperSport United), Bongani Khumalo (PAOK, Greece), Erick Mathoho (Chiefs), Anele Ngcongca (Genk, Belgium), Punch Masenamela (Sundowns), Kgosi Ntlhe (Peterborough, England)

Midfielders: Kamohelo Mokotjo (Feyenoord, Holland), Steven Pienaar (captain)(Everton, England), Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Siphiwe Tshabalala (both Chiefs), Thulani Serero (Ajax Amsterdam, Holland), Katlego Mashego (Free State Stars), Dean Furman (Oldham Athletic, England), Kagisho Dikgacoi (Crystal Palace, England), May Mahlangu (Malmo, Sweden), Lerato Chabangu (Moroka Swallows)

Strikers: Bernard Parker (Chiefs), Siyabonga Nomvete (Swallows), Dino Ndlovu (Maccabi Haifa, Israel), Thamsanqa Gabuza (Golden Arrows)

But the new Bafana coach had to make a number of changes to that squad, as players dropped like flies after the team announcement.

Nomvete and Pienaar pulled out with injury and were replaced by Edward Manqele of Sundowns and George Maluleka of SuperSport.

Manqele was injured hours later, and Igesund called up Pirates striker Benni McCarthy.

Chiefs defender Siboniso Gaxa was then called up to replace the injured Ngcongca.

The starting line-up for the 1-0 loss to Brazil:

Khune, Gaxa, Khumalo, Sangweni, Masenamela, Furman (Mahlangu 59), Dikgacoi, Tshabalala, Chabangu (Letsholonyane 56), Ndlovu (McCarthy 33) (Parker 44), Serero (Maluleka 76)

The injury nightmare continued, as McCarthy and Ndlovu suffered a hamstring injury and a dislocated shoulder, respectively, in the match against Brazil. They were not replaced.

The starting line-up for the 2-0 win over Mozambique:

Josephs, Gaxa, Sangweni, Khumalo (Fransman 70), Masenamela, Tshabalala (Matlaba 84), Furman (Mokotjo 90), Letsholonyane (Maluleka 62), Serero (Mahlangu 55), Parker, Chabangu (Gabuza 74)

Reports in the Sunday Times claimed that Pienaar will be retiring from international football, however, Igesund insisted to KickOff.com yesterday that the Everton man is still the national captain.

Gordon and Chiefs fans can keep their useless squad, i so wish Sangweni could fake an injury and allow these palokas to represent their country.

Gordon u are heading for disaster and your reputation will be compromised - YEYE,SHABBA,PARKER,KHUNE,PIENAAR,KG are failures of note.

Interesting how the levels of hype & interest for Gordons squad announcement has toned down...

Last time round we were bombarded by with "Gordon the Messaih's anticipated squad...

Hehe.... people have realized that it's the same old story... people are still happy & celebrate sub-standards and players like Shabba are still useless...

As if Gordon was gonna teach Shabba how to control the ball....
