The Mbombela Bafana Bafana/Africa Cup of Nations debacle: What really happened?

Posted: 28 September 2012 Time: 08:15 am

The latest KICK OFF Yearbook reveals the true story of that fateful day in October 2011 – when Bafana Bafana thought they had qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The KICK OFF Yearbook covers every aspect of South African soccer: Every Premiership team, every First Division team, every player ... and every Bafana match.

And in the Yearbook's National Team Review you will find out how the events on that Saturday in Nelspruit unfolded:

"How did it come to be that South Africa played for a draw when only victory would give them a place at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations?

"That question was asked, not only by anguished South African soccer lovers, but by football folk the world over."

Speaking to people within Safa, KICK OFF discovered who was being fingered with the blame for the disaster.

"Word is that [Safa CEO Robin] Petersen spent much of the second half of the match frantically trying to contact CAF to confirm what would happen if Bafana drew the match and finished level with Niger in Group G. CAF, it seems, struggled to give him a definitive answer."

With 20 minutes to go in the game, Petersen received a fateful SMS – but the message never reached Pitso Mosimane's ears ...

Dont be stupid KO, does it matter what Pertesen did 20 min or 20 years before (or even during) the match.........................no coach can go into the final match of qualifications without knowing the possible consequenses of a draw or loss.Infact the rules were there at the draw. Did Petersen instruct that idiot 'madala Khune to fake injury' every 5 seconds. Leave Pertesen out of this. It was evident from kickoff that BB didnt want to loose the game..................but were content with a draw. Are you trying to tell us that Petersen is the one who decides the outcome of BB games. STUPID !!!!!!!.

@ Sooper... Egypt didn't even threaten us that, What heroics are you talking about??? Khune's Heroics were appreciated by Nigereans who qualified for the 1st time after he faked an injury, foolishly killing our hopes

It's simple one cow decided to fake injuries where we didn't need that. He and his partners in crime (Yeye and Nyawana) are responsible for us not qualifying, period. The focus should be on the three cows.

Nyawana led the team to the dancing corner. Yeye followed.

This stadium belongs to the zebras...Khune, Nyawana and Yeye danced hlokoloza. Khune faked injury.

But the most imortant one is that Bobby is involved in the controversial tender awarding of the contractor of this stadium.

Silly of Pitso and the technical team. The coach must prepare the team for a win and nothing else. Otherwise, we would keep celebrating mediocrity. The world celebrate with the winner. Well, as they say, the rest is history! Shame we still havetime to entertain past issues that should not have happened.

Mr Editor, tell us about the mighty BUCS.

Khune has bad tendencies. He never learns from his barbaric ways. He dived and cried, wasted time, and I don't know what else he did in the name of time wasting. Against Wits he even received a yellow card for his time wasting acting ways. He must call mfundi vundla for auditions at Generations. He can be the new Khaphela because he is also a madala

Up the Bucs until the true murderers of Kimmy Mohlala are taken into custody
