Mogorosi: My wish for Botswana football

Botswana star player Joel Mogorosi says they need to export more players

Botswana star player Joel Mogorosi tells KickOff.com that ‘The Zebras' will become a force to be reckoned with should the country exports more players.

The Zebras had six foreign-based players when they made their Africa Cup of Nations maiden appearance early this year, but Mogorosi, who is now playing for Bloemfontein Celtic, believes his move and hopefully more in future, will certainly improve the national team.

"Truly speaking, we need more players from my country to go play in other countries because that seems to have a positive effect on the national team. If you look at it, we have had more players in the past few years coming to play in South Africa like Phenyo Mongala and Mogogi Gabonamong, then we qualified for the Afcon for the first time in our history," Mogorosi affirms.

Besides Mogorosi, there are couple more players who left Botswana for the Premier Soccer League in South Africa in the past few months such as the new Platinum Stars duo of Kabelo Dambe and Mogakolodi Ngele as well as Ofentse Nato, who moved to Bidvest Wits.

But some, such as Mongala and Boitumelo Mafoko, have gone back home.

"The football back home is not so professional," Mogorosi admits. "The most talented players back home go for training whenever they want and some say they are just playing football because they like it, not necessarily looking at the sport from a professional point of view. I wish to see more players from Botswana go play outside because that clearly benefits the national team," he continues.

Meanwhile, the 28-year-old is happy with his start with Siwelele.

"So far everything is working out well for me at Celtic, because I have the full support of everyone at the club. I'm trying to work very hard, but so far I'm happy with the start," Mogorosi adds.

I disagree with this. Botswana, or any country for that matter, can become a force in international football if there is more investment in football development and coach education. A player is only as good as the coaching they receive. And the part where he says most players in Botswana are not serious could be attributed to the nurturing and grooming of players from a young age. The junior coaching approach within football clubs needs to be revamped and there should be as much emphasis on psychological and social development as there is on technical and physical development. You don't need to have players dotted across the globe to have a competitive side. It's about what you are doing at home in terms of development which is more important. And in any case, if players at home do not have a professional attitude, how will they make it in professional leagues abroad then? To be a professional football player it is not enough to have good technical ability. You also need the right attitude, temperament and a strong mentality.
