He was 31. The cause of death is not yet known.
The Empangeni-born defensive midfielder, who was apparently ill, was last heard of when he signed a short-term deal with Thanda Royal Zulu in January.
Sometime in August, he put up a message on his Facebook page announcing that he had called it quits.
Biyela's death was confirmed by Thanda general manager Thabani Gumede, who reportedly was close to the former player.
"I got the news about three hours ago," Gumede says.
Biyela's death comes barely 18 months since his father died in January 2011, after he was swept away by floods.
KICK OFF extends its heartfelt condolences to the Biyela family and his friends in the beautiful game.
