Unhappy Keshi rips into Eagles

Stephen Keshi ripped into his Nigeria team on Saturday

Posted: 10 September 2012 Time: 09:50 am

Stephen Keshi ripped into his team on Saturday, after they gave up a winning position to draw 2-2 in the first leg of their 2013 African Nations Cup qualifier.

The Nigeria coach told the players that their display against Liberia's Lone Star lacked fighting spirit and was a show of unprofessionalism which will no longer be accepted.

Keshi addressed the players at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Monrovia, moments after the encounter, when surging fans prevented the team from leaving the arena.

He also took time off to mention some players who did not show enough professionalism in the green white colours of the Nigerian side and said anyone who is invited and knows he will not be able to show maturity and patriotism should henceforth stay away from the national team and he will thank such players.

"I will appreciate players staying away and saying they cannot make it than for them to come and show Nigerians that we are not serious here. I recall that when we thought we were going to play on a synthetic pitch, I called Mikel Obi and he said it’s not healthy for him to play on such a pitch.

"That is the type of maturity and honesty I want from all national team players," Keshi said.

Keshi went on to make it clear that henceforth any player who would be unable to make it to camp at the appointed time will not be welcomed.

"Any player who cannot make it on time should just stay away, because we need all the time we can get to blend for our games, because the Nations Cup is just around the corner.

"With this attitude on the pitch from top professionals that are in this collection, we won’t excel at the Nations Cup, that is what we want to stop," he said.

Colin remember, your youth corps days in MIFE how we trashed issues like this. The truth is that there should not be any sentiment in football matters like this. You never highlighted that Enyeama's poor goalkeeping resulted to the second goal. His mistake also caused us our last march. Siasia is now vindicated. The answer to all these is to drop Enyeama until he is fit enough to be our first choice goalkeeper.

The goalkeeper trainer Ike Shorunmi was not a good goalkeeper in his days and i am not show he can identify a good on, therefore, change him and engage an excellent foreign goalkeeper trainer.

Keshi will be the achitect of his down fall. This so called home based eagles will cause his sack. Its high time he call our best legs and assemble dem wit few local players who realy know their onion in the round lether game such as egwuike, oboabona, izu azuka and gabriel ruben. It baffles me wen keshi have to ignore the exploits of our better players lyk sone aluko, mikel obi, osaze odewinge, brown ideye, john chibuike, michael odibe, john ogu, taiye taiwo, elderson echiejile etc. Players lyk ejike uzoenyi, oshinawa and co hv no biz in d national team. To summarize everytin keshi is try to use the national team as a medium to market some players abroad. Ejike hv gone on trials to many foreing clubs abroad buh notin came out of it which signifies dat he is not gud at all.

Wot re the craterias used in inviting a player to any national team? This has to do wit ik uche. I find it difficult to bliv dat a striker lyk ik uche who struggled in all d clubs he hv played for in spain is our top nine, a striker who can't score up to 10 goals a season and also plays wit a second division club in spain always bench the likes of emmanuel emenike, brown ideye, osaze odewinge, odion ighalo, joseph akpala etc. To me its very absurd. A striker who will miss 10 chances and score one lol

Thank you Enyema for the two cheap goals you gave to Liberia as a gift. The blame should be on so -called Coach Ike Sorumu who cannot present a fit goal keeper for the match. Instead, My Sorumu was drilling Enyema before the game.

@charlesbrown, was it dat d home base eagle was d player dat made d mistake dat cost us d max point? Pls we should learn how to appreciate our own. Mikel and co of dis world were in d squad dat lost to Guinea in conakry and drew in Abuja. There was no home base eagle.

Mikel said he does not want to play on astro-turf and he got praised by keshi despite the fact that he is effectively picking the games he wishes to play.
I have got news for you guys, Ghana is playing Liberia in a friendly at the same venue tomorrow and I am sure Ghana will do what Nigeria failed to do.....and by the way, how come a friendly match has not been arranged with a team like Senegal to further blend the likely team not an experimental team like the one that played the last friendly against Niger.

I did not watch the match hence cannot say much about the boy's performance, but what pains me most is when the Liberian coach said that "Nigeria is only living on past glory", it made me realise that the boys played rubbish in Liberia. And now Keshi confirmed it. Does Keshi really have what it takes to make these boys more committed and more technically sound? Well, we are still watching. I have deliberately refrained from commenting so as to give Keshi time and space. October is just round the corner. Nigeria will most likely defeat Liberia then, but will they go past the group stage in the Nation's Cup proper? The reports and results I have been hearing have not been very inspiring, but we still continue to hope.....

Why is it that Super Eagles always perform poorly whenever we invite this so called foreign based pros? The zeal with which the home boys play is different from the foreign pros. These guys hve nothing to prove, unlike their local colleagues. I wish Keshi will focus on the local lads more. If you ask me we do not need more than 3 at most 4 foreign pros at any given time. I hope we would learn sometime.

Its not really nice from Keshi to do this publicly!! He should have criticized them behind closed doors and address ALL players. This will just bring problem between home and foreign based.

In my opinion I think the problem is as always: we Africans underestimate organisation/management!!

And this is Keshis(staff) fault!!

Our Nff knew that the atmosphere would be hostile in Liberia before the match. So it would have made more sense to arrive 3 days earlier. 1 day to arrive and 2 to prepare... end of the story.

We couldnt win this match because of mismanagement end of the story!!

Actually I support Keshi but he should know stick to this Team and stop changing them. And he should prepare perfect for the match in Calabar.

"Any player who cannot make it on time should just stay away, because we need all the time we can get to blend for our games, because the Nations Cup is just around the corner." So Mr Keshi is saying he needs the few days before a major match to blend the players? How is it possible to blend players days before a game? You should have a team weeks if not months before any encounter. If Keshi believed in the local boys, why did he not use the same players as he has used in all the friendly games. Mr big boss is not technically sound. My question is, what country can the super eagles beat without question? They are indeed living on past glory. There has to be a minnow in football somewhere on planet earth. This team is a joke that includes the administration as well. The name of the team should be reverted back to Green Eagles because there is absolutely nothing super about this team. And the goal keeper that has not caught a ball in any team is the starting goal keeper? How is that possible?

Surely nigeria will qualify for next years nations cup but the issue here is are we going there to make up the numbers or win the trophy because if we re to go with this players I know we re going nowhere.we started glamouring for local bases players bcos zambia won the nations cup wit local players(wot zambia paraded was all they have and their best). Am not saying that the local based players re not gud but majority of them lack exposure and modern techniques players playing abroad do have. From the report of the match I read yesterday (goal.com), oboabona was played at right back wen we have a terna suswan who can play both d right and left back witout difficulty. Egwueke was rock solid, oshinawa was nothing to write home about, ejike played his normal school boy football. We have untested young players out there in europe doing very well in their respective clubs, players lyk sone aluko, kenneth omeruo, ogenyi onazi, daniel adejo etc.

Keshi should shut his stinking mouth up. Alwayssss complain and excuses, haba! If you can't do the job, don't blame it on the players because you are the one who invited them to play. You are being paid to assembled 11 best players to represent Nigeria and give us good football with result, so if they fail to produce the result, you should be responsible for that. Omg!!! Keshi make me suck, I can't believe you are praising mikel that didnt show up because of artificial grass ahead of those that rusk their legs to play. So if Nigeria eventually qualify, and one of the venues we wull be playing in South Africa happen to be artificial, will mikel refuse to play? Thats even if he (mikel) shows up. It is just simple, keshi os not competent enough to coach eagles, period.

The Nigerian Players rating for the match from a Liberian sports site:
Vincent Eyeama: The French club Lille goaltender who is on loan at Israeli club Meccabi Telaviv was a complete disappointment and showed he is match rusty since he warmed the bench the whole of last season in France. He was lackluster and was the cause of both goals by the Lone Star. He was not agile, lacked the quickness off his line and lacked the usual confidence and commanding nature. The only thing he could be remembered was that he tried starting play from the back.Rating: 5.0
Juwon Oshaniwa: Not much was seen from the Sharks FC full back as he did not venture forward much and was often dribbled by the mostly skillful Lone Star wideman. He did not put up a solid performance.Rating: 5.5
Godfrey Itama Oboabona: The Sun Shine Stars player proved solid from the onset as he won a host of tackles and made some forward runs, but as the game progressed he lost concentration and was often bewildered. Also, he was outnumbered on some occasions.Rating: 6.0
Emmanuel Azubike Egwuekwe: A very solid performer in central defense. He won the 50-50 balls and proved a very steady member of the back four. The Warri Wolves center back nearly got a goal from a corner as the looping ball fell right before him in the opponents’ goal mouth, but he surprisingly blew it over the bar and knocked the ground in frustration.Rating: 8.0

Joseph Yobo: At age 32 and wearing his 88th cap the Turkish club Fernabache man was not at his commanding best. He was mostly useful in the air but struggle for pace the rare times he was called to duty. Due to fatigue and the lack of nothing more to give, the former Everton man had to be substituted.Rating: 6.5

Nwanko Obiora: The ex-Inter Milan youngster was a very effective performer as he sprayed the passes and kept his composure. He made several cleverly measured passes and was an asset for his side.Rating: 8.0

Igiebor NosaKharee: The Spanish club Real Betis jammer was very mobile, influential and hardworking. He covered lots of grounds and made the team have balance. His goal marked his side equalizer and made several strong runs in the final third.Rating: 7.5
Victor Moses: No wonder why European club champions Chelsea splashed mega millions on him. On the day, the former Wigan man was potent as he weaved through opponents and even caused a penalty. He recovered quickly and was very business minded. Had to be substituted due to knock he received all over.Rating: 8.0
Christantus Uzoenyi Ejike: A very pacey winger who had a good game. His speed and work ethic helped his side in the tussle, but at time stood accused of spending much time on the ball to show off with his strength.Rating: 7.5
Ukwechukwu Uche: The Villareal man on loan at Granada CF finished the penalty, but could have scored two clearer cut chances. It was a surprise that a player of his caliber could not bury such glaring chances. Overall, he was a handful to the Lone Star defense as his pace and power was his weapons.Rating: 5.5
Emmanuel Eminike: By his standard the man from Spartak Moscow had a very uninspiring game. It was a surprise that he played the full 90 minutes. He was a tower of strength though and won some set pieces, but he rarely got a shot on goal.Rating: 6.0
Ahmed Musa: The man from CSKA Moscow was introduced rather later but still made an impact as his combination with speed and skills and tee up Uche for what should have being a goal.Rating: 5.5

Efe Ambrose: The Celtic defender came on as a rescue to the Nigerian defense since its leader Joseph Yobo seemed hapless in the latter stages. Replacing Yobo, he had to ensure they protect a tiring defense and a shaky goalkeeper as the match ended 2-2. Rating: 6.0

A very unprofessional outburst from a coach I used to respect highly in his playing days as a super eagles player. Keshi, it appears you did not learn from Siasia and, if you are not careful, you will ruin your team and lose the respect of your players. You are whining about your players lacking the fighting spirit to play for Nigeria. Well, have you considered inviting Danny Shittu? Yes, some people may question his skill level, but Shittu always contested for balls and gave 100% on the field. If you are not interested in inviting him because he now plays in the English championship for Milwall, then let me take on a trip down memory lane. Westerhof invited Reuben Agboola who used to play for Third Division side Port Vale to represent Nigeria as his starting left full back during the 1988 AFCON in Morocco. Agboola's selection was based purely on merit. Why don't you do the same, Keshi. Quit inviting all these so-called big name pros in European football. They will fail you and eventually lead to your sack. Invite Danny Shittu. Kalu Uche (Ike Uche's older brother), and Chinedu Obasi. These players will work for the team and maintain a fighting spirit for 90 minutes of action on the field. For the record, as it stands today, I doubt if we will beat Liberia at home with this team that played a 2-2 in Monrovia. Nevertheless, abi all of us na naija? We are watching to see what will happen in October. I am not interested in seeing the eagles go to South Africa to register their name. Quit this heartbreaking rebuilding program and invite only those players that are doing well and those who truly love (patriotism) playing/fighting for the colors of their fatherland.

Correction:

Reuben Agboola played for Nigeria at Senegal 1992 AFCON, not Morocco 88 AFCON as I had earlier stated. Thanks!
