Igesund calls up McCarthy

Gordon Igesund calls up Benni McCarthy for Bafana squad

Posted: 2 September 2012 Time: 09:30 pm

Gordon Igesund's first Bafana Bafana squad has been ravaged by injury – he has now called up Benni McCarthy to replace Edward Manqele.

Hardly hours after he had called on Manqele to replace Siyabonga Nomvete, the Mamelodi Sundowns striker pulled a hamstring in a Premiership match against Maritzburg United on Sunday afternoon, forcing the Bafana coach into yet another change.

Igesund has also called up SuperSport United's George Maluleka to replace Steven Pienaar of Everton, who was also injured this weekend.

"I have called up Benni McCarthy to replace Manqele who in turn had replaced Nomvete," Igesund says.

Nomvete was carried off the pitch injured on Saturday evening during Moroka Swallows' match against Orlando Pirates.

Despite a fraught history with the national team, Benni McCarthy said in March that he would welcome a return to the Bafana fold.

Bafana Bafana leave for Sao Paolo on Monday morning to play five-time World Cup champions Brazil on Friday, September 7.

Under the circumstances, this is acceptable and GI is forgiven. On the flip side Benni's experience will come in handy seeing that we don't have experienced strikers and generally a relatively experienced squad going to compete the world football royalty. Let's rally behind GI and the boys, they might just surprise!

Master G had 2 players bailing out on him due to injury it will be very narrow minded to be pointing a finger at him. Sometimes we act as if we get everything we wish for in our own lives or are lives are perfect and we are accustomed to everything going our way. If you feel the national squad is not perfect, so is your life, you already know how to deal with it so deal with it. I will judge every bafana player after the matches, do the same and avoid a humble pie incase its dished.
