South Africans in Europa League action

Posted: 24 August 2012 Time: 08:34 am

It was a mixed night of Uefa Europa League action for South Africans playing abroad on Thursday, and all of them still have with plenty of work to do in the second legs of their play-off round fixtures next week.

Anele Ngcongca was at centre-back again for Genk as they lost 2-1 away at Swiss side Luzern. With the home leg to come next Thursday, the Belgian side will be confident of progressing, but they might have hoped for the comfort of an away lead.

Ayanda Patosi got his first taste of European club competition when he played the first 75 minutes of Lokeren's 2-1 home win over Czech side Viktoria Plzeň.

The Belgians face a stern test away from home though and this tie is very much still in the balance.

It was a similar story for Bongani Khumalo, who played for PAOK as they defeated Austrian side Rapid Vienna 2-1 in their home leg, and now have plenty to do on their away trip next week.

PAOK played the final 15 minutes with 10 men following the sending-off of Costin Lazăr, while Khumalo also received a yellow card.

Kamohelo Mokotjo was an unused substitute as Feyenoord were held 2-2 at home by Czech outfit Sparta Prague. The Dutch side had to come from 2-0 down and got their equaliser three minutes into injury-time.

And finally, Portuguese side Maritimo took a slender 1-0 lead from the home leg of their tie with Georgian side Dila Gori.

There was no sign of South African-born Sergio Marakis, though he is among the players registered by Maritimo for the competition this year.

The winners of these ties advance to the group stages of the competition.
