Fernandez will do this on a temporary basis until a decision has been made on what to do next.
Shongwe and the club parted ways by mutual consent after the former Swazi international felt he couldn’t continue in his role given his back injury.
Fernandez is one of three goalkeepers at the club, along with current number one Ronwen Williams and Baofela Pule.
"I have been asked to do this on a temporary basis and I am fine with that," Fernandez told KickOff.com.
“I just have to make sure that while I train the two younger guys that I also keep myself fit because I still definitely have some playing time ahead of me,” the 34-year-old says.
“Ronwen is doing very well right now as first choice, but I still have a lot of game time in me, so all three of us have to stay sharp.
“I do see this as a potential long-term role for me after I stop playing. Coaching goalkeepers at a PSL club would be fantastic.”
