Artificial turf for Abuja Stadium

Artificial turf for Abuja Stadium

Posted: 13 August 2012 Time: 02:06 pm

Discussions are in progress to have an artificial turf installed at the Abuja National Stadium.

Sources close to the planning informed KickOffNigeria.com exclusively that discussions are taking place with the Sports Ministry on the proposed installation.

"The ministry is discussing with a company to install an artificial pitch at the Abuja Stadium.

"Nothing has been finalized yet, but artificial turf requires little maintenance and that's why the decision is being made," a source said.

Completed in 2003, the playing pitch at the Abuja Stadium has fallen into disrepair from lack of maintenance.

This has forced the senior national team to move their home games across the country, with Calabar the preferred destination.

When and if the turf is installed, it would leave Calabar and Kaduna as the only major stadia in Nigeria with natural grass pitches.

It is not a scenario that pleases Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi. The former defender complained about a lack of grass pitches prior to a hectic summer of fixtures in June.

But one official involved was keen to point out that the plans call for a top of the line turf.

"This particular turf will be very close to organic, with a sand base as opposed to the plastic base of the other artificial pitches across the country."

If this is true, then it is a sad development. Does it mean we cannot maintain grass? I hope it is not true...I truly hope so.

Artificial turf in Abuja stadium? it is the main stadium in Nigeria if i'm not mistaken. How can Nigerian government fail to maintain natural grass in the stadium? Look at the Nigerian olympics team, no medal. Athletes are trying hard to put the country on the map, but no support. Nigeria must take sport seriously or you'll end up losing athletes to other countries. Don't be suprise to see Nigerians playing of Bafana Bafana in future. In rugby we got some players from Nigeria.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, i can't laugh enough on decisions taken each day by these guys in the glass house. They are full of Laziness, incompetence, corrupt and lack of vision. I can't find enough word to describe the shame these men bring to Nigeria each day. Well, since Nigerians are satisfied with these men running of the glass house, they should continue to accept this incompetence management.

The only good about artificial turf is it look on television. It is not good in a hot climate because the surface temparature on the pitch is at least 20 degrees higher than the temperature outside. Whether rubber or sand based it is still the same, very hot. You can see the heat wave on the pitch, it is just like in a bath house. But then in Africa maintenance has always been a problem for that reason only it may be suitable. Grass field reguire a lot of maintenance but the initial cost is consederably lower than the turf field. Artificial initial cost is in the millions. It is easy to break a bone because the field does not give like a grass field. There is an injury called turf toe which is endemic to turf field.

The fools in glass house only think about their pockets. They will go for the more expensive artificial turf because they can embezzle more money out of the contract. NFF tried so hard to get Arsenal and the organizers of that abandoned match to pay for the Abuja grass at 200% more than the contractor was going to charge them. The gentlemen declined and left NFF to carry their own cross. Now we can see where these rogues are pushing our football.

When Mikel and other talented footballers refuse to play on that synthetic pitch, NFF will label them unpatriotic. Meanwhile, those "big belle clowns" are only patriotic to their pockets. Im sorry for Nigeria, corruption and no maintenance culture is our bane. SLYMAN

Why are these thieves only interested in their pockets? All pitches for serious footballing the world over is grass, even to Russia where the temperature is low. Why artificial turf in the tropics with enough rain and sunshine? Those thieves should be hanged!

Please can somebody tell me why is it a sad story that Nigeria is going for artificial turf?, ARTIFICIAL GRASS IS THE FUTURE but it has to be the right type of artificial grass and infill, NOT THE BLACK, GREEN OR BROWN RUBBER GRANULES INFILL OR A SAND INFILL PITCH that all produce carcinogenic compound in humidity, There is a real problem has been ignored or hidden concerning respirable particulate material (PM) associated with sand (and/or rubber)when used as artificial turf infill,
Crystalline silica (quartz sand) is classified as Group 1 (carcinogenic to humans) by IARC (Int’l Agency for Research on Cancer). Apart from the health risk associated with the crumb rubber infill pitch and the sand infilled pitch, both products have a very bad ball behavior, There is a current ban on crumb rubber granule for astro turf pitches in Italy because of adverse health reasons to athletes.

Nigeria as a sporting nation can afford to have the FERRARI OF ARTIFICIAL TURF am talking about HYBRID TURF that REVOLUTIONIZES the world of artificial turf pitches around the world, The hybrid turf system combines living natural grass with synthetic turf, Grass seeds are cultivated inside LIMONTA patente INFILLPRO GEO (100% organic coconut fiber and coir infill ) to combine the durability of synthetic materials with the performance, safety and realistic look of natural grass, This system is currently installed at AC MILLAN STADIUM, INTER MILAN STADIUM, SPARTAK MOSCO STADIUM, AJAX AMSTERDAM,

INFILLPRO GEO (100% ORGANIC COCONUT FIBER AND COIR) ARTIFICIAL GRASS PITCH that is 98% close to natural turf pitch IS CURRENTLY BEING INSTALLED AT APER AKU STADIUM IN MAKURDI BENUE STATE NIGERIA and it will be the first of its kind in sub saharan africa.

@Slyman+anonymous, Your comment is infinitly spot on, it's called an 'eagle eye opinion' by my school of thought. @monimichelle, I like your name and your format. Surely, those imps in glass house can buy your idea 100% given its allien and virgin nature. Maybe you can win the contract for thrillions of pounds with rational percentage given to the contract ensurer ( a glass house member). Abeg mek i send you my account number mek you use send my share when you win the contract ???? Lol. Odiegwu really.

It cost One million dollars to install a basic high school artificial turf and another $500,000 to maintain it after 10years if it is not over used. It needs to be swept and maintain. I was told by a peson whose maintain such filed for a living that the cost is higher than that of grass field. Grass field to install is in the thousand and about $3,000 to maintain it. Now with the national statdium being used by the so called xtians for crusade, I dont see how it wont be overused in less than 3years. The wear and tear of too many people standing and stumping on it is greater than playing football on it.
As always the failure in Africa Nigerian in particular is maintenance and soembody dreaming a project up so they can make money

The name of the game is Maintenance and Nigeria does not and will never have it. The National arts theater, the National Stadium in Lagos are examples. White Elephant is the euphemism for such projects for as long as i can remember. Even when Nigeria hosted the All Africa games and built the Festac village, it all went to waste. Artificial turf also requires maintenance and top players in top teams do not like it due to injuries and not been used to it as well as they normally play on natural grass that is manicured by top groundsmen. Nigeria is in a tropical climate and yet cannot maintain natural grass, that is so hilarious. Incompetence and corruption rules in Nigeria which is sad but the Government can do something. President Jonathan, Please do something, anything!!
