Big clash of the MTN8 quarters: Chiefs vs Downs

Preview of the big clash of the MTN8 quarters: Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns

Posted: 4 August 2012 Time: 12:52 pm

Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs will meet for the pick of the MTN8 quarter-finals at Loftus Stadium on Sunday.

The match kicks off at 3pm.

Sundowns finished fourth on the League table in 2011/12, having looked the favourites to win the championship for a large part of the season.

As ever, the Brazilians have been very active in the transfer market, bringing in Edward Manqele, Eleazar Rodgers, Wayne Arendse and Tebogo Langerman, among others.

Chiefs ended fifth on the log table after a season in which they relieved Vladimir Vermezovic of his coaching duties and also suffered a record string of four successive losses.

Yet Amakhosi are confident that under new coach Stuart Baxter, and with some significant new additions to their squad, such as Morgan Gould, Erick Mathoho and Siyabonga Nkosi, they will challenge for honours this season.

Sundowns will be looking to go one step further in the MTN8 than last season when they were defeated 4-3 on aggregate in the semi-finals by eventual winners Orlando Pirates.

As for Chiefs, they were the unfortunate team who ended on the losing side in the Final, losing 1-0 to Pirates after extra-time. It was their second appearance in an MTN8 final, having beaten Sundowns on penalties to take the crown in 2008.

The two teams have no less than 17 Top 8 Cup titles between them – Amakhosi have a record 14, while the Brazilians are third on the honours list (behind Chiefs and Pirates) with three.

This MTN8 quarter-final will be the 26th cup meeting between Downs and Chiefs since 1985, with six of those being matches in the Top 8 Cup.

Amakhosi have a fine cup record against the Brazilians down the years, with 12 wins and just four losses. Of the nine matches that have ended in stalemate, seven have gone to penalties and Chiefs have won no less than six of these spot-kick battles.

In all competitions the teams have met 79 times since 1985, with Chiefs claiming 34 wins to Sundowns' 21.

The Brazilians do have a better head-to-head record in home games (14 wins, 11 losses) but they have not beaten Amakhosi in a home cup match since way back in 1988.

Chiefs have also won three of the teams last four league matches, including a home and away 'double' last season.

The teams' last meeting was a League match in May at FNB Stadium, which Chiefs won 2-0 with goals from Sthembiso Ngcobo and Siphiwe Tshabalala.

If that's the case the players must come to the party and produce an entertaining encounter for the spectators of both teams, both teams are capable of winning the trophy after all!

The sad part is that it was indeed a penalty. Ball was handled in the 18th area. But there is an outburst from gorillas blaming the referee. ref was spot on, so stop being cry babies.

@ Champ "Superbrand" don't even bother with them my brother, the just and will never deal with the fact that we won back to back trebles, and that we are far better than them, that is why many of them will die sooner than their time, and over what really? Over people who don't even know that they exist. We are just too good for the PSL and these losers know it and that is why they will die a thousand deaths. UP THE BUCS!!!
