Wafa Wafa: MTN8 confirmed!

MTN8 dates, venues and sponsorship confirmed

Posted: 31 July 2012 Time: 01:37 pm

MTN left it fine, but have renewed their sponsorship with the PSL as the headline sponsor of the MTN8, which starts on Friday.

The deal has extended for three more years, until 2014.

The much-anticipated tournament features the top eight teams from last season in a battle for R8-million winner-takes-all prize, on the weekend of August 3.

The PSL has confirmed that the top four teams from last season have again secured home ground advantage in the quarter-final stage.

The MTN8 tournament dates

  • 3, 4 and 5 August (quarter finals)
  • 18 and 19 August (semi-finals 1st leg)
  • 25 and 26 August (semi-finals 2nd leg)
  • 22 September (Final)

"It is crisp, competitive and most of all, it is engaging," PSL Chariman Irvin Khoza says. "It is a season opener; high on talk time. Cup competitions don't come better than MTN8.

"Like a catwalk is to fashion revelation, MTN8 provides a platform and opportunity for supporters and fans to see the revelation of players for the new season."

Reigning MTN8 champions Orlando Pirates will host the opening quarter-final against Bloemfontein Celtic on Friday at Orlando Stadium at 8pm.

The following day SuperSport United host Free State Stars at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane at 3pm.

On Sunday Moroka Swallows welcome AmaZulu in Dobsonville at 3pm, and Mamelodi Sundowns will square up against Kaizer Chiefs at the Loftus Stadium at the same time.

In announcing the decision, MTN SA's chief marketing officer Serame Taukobong said: "After a successful and mutually beneficial partnership over the past four years with the PSL, which has benefited local football and invested in numerous social upliftment projects, we saw it befitting that we continue to invest in football development in the country, while connecting fans with their passion for the beautiful game through epic football tales and unique competitions."

The Last Fan Standing competition

MTN8 fans can look forward to yet another exciting Last Fan Standing this year competition. MTN will reward the Last Fan Standing and ultimate South African Fan with a trip to watch El Clásico in Spain in 2012/13, plus R1-million in cash.

To stand a chance to win, fans must recharge with a minimum of R10 airtime, and opt in to the competition by dialing *186*8#.

By doing so, fans will be automatically entered into a weekly draw to be selected as one of the weekly finalists to as well go into the final play-offs for the prize.

The competition runs from August 6 to September 8, with the Last Fan Standing announced on the day of the MTN8 Final on September 22.

In 1985 is the year when Black and White league were combined to form one National soccer league (NSL)

Chiefs dominated the league during the era of a devided counrty. winning only 5 league trophies since 1985

Sundowns dominated during the where one league was formed in SA winning 8 league trophies since 1985

Pirates won 5 league trophies since 1985

Pirates won one championsn league trophy

Sundowns reached the final of champions league in 2001 when they lost to Ahly

Chiefs never reach a champions league final in its history

Chiefs players don't have memories in CL or rub shoulder with best players in the african continent in the Top competition on african soil but remains one of the best supported teams in Africa.

You never even heard chiefs management talking about winning a champions league. They must not tell us about winning Mandela cup because it meant for smaller teams under achieving teams like chiefs.
