While the highlight of these matches is tomorrow's Carling Black Label Cup clash between holders Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium, other clubs have also lined up a number of matches that will mark the highlight of their off-season preparations.
Maritzburg United face FC AK today at Eldorado Park ahead of a busy weekend that will see them taking part in a four-team tournament that will also feature Golden Arrows, AmaZulu and Thanda Royal Zulu.
Today is also a huge occasion for Platinum Stars, who face Australian team Perth Glory at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit in a match that will give coach Cavin Johnson a chance to test his charges against international opposition.
"We are looking forward to it," says Johnson.
"The boys will certainly feel like they in a proper game and that is exactly what we want at this stage of our pre-season," adds the coach.
High spending Mamelodi Sundowns will be out to defend the Mopani Municipality Mayoral Cup on Sunday when they meet League rivals SuperSport United in the first semi-final at Giyani Stadium.
The other semi-final clash will feature Moroka Swallows and Vodacom League outfit Baobab Zero Fake FC.
The Final will involve the two winners of the semi-final clashes.
Sundowns, who looked impressive in Swaziland during a recent training camp, will be expected to defend the title they won last season (the only trophy they have won in the last four seasons).
The competition will also present another opportunity for Brazilians coach Johan Neeskens to work on his combinations with the new players ahead of the new season.
