Sweden beat South Africa in opening game of the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament

Sweden beat South Africa 4-1 in their Group F opening game of the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament on Wednesday evening.

Nilla Fischer, Lisa Dahlkvist and Lotta Schelin were all on target in the first half as the European side made their mark in Group F at the City of Coventry stadium.

Portia Modise pulled one back for South Africa with an early goal of the tournament contender but it proved merely a consolation for Mkhonzana Mkhonza’s side as Schelin added a fourth moments later.

The Swedes dominated the encounter from the first whistle and could have taken the lead within five minutes but midfielder Caroline Seger saw her effort from distance come back off the crossbar.

Thomas Dennerby’s side were ahead in the sixth minute, though, when captain Fischer’s strike from the edge of the penalty area deflected off South Africa defender Refiloe Jane and looped over helpless goalkeeper Roxanne Barker into the net.

The lead was doubled on 19 minutes after Marie Hammarstrom picked out team-mate Dahlkvist with an accurate cross and the latter converted from close range.

Within seconds, Sweden extended their advantage even further and ensured their Olympic campaign would start with a win. Fischer found Schelin free behind the South African defence and the forward poked the ball past Barker to make it 3-0.

Finally sparked into action, South Africa almost responded immediately but Modise shot wide after being afforded too much time and space in the Sweden box, in the last genuine action of the opening period.

Modise more than made up for that miss 14 minutes into the second half, however, beating Sweden ‘keeper Hedvig Lindahl from almost the halfway line to give the South Africans a slim chance of mounting a comeback.

Any hopes of securing a result were dashed within three minutes, though, as Schelin claimed her second goal of the match to restore Sweden’s three-goal cushion, which was rarely threatened during the rest of the encounter.

yo aikhona, the banyana captain plays kaak. She never played like a leader, every ball she passed went to the opponent's player. She plays kaak!

Portia was a gem, she was playing alone, no supported by her team mates. The less said about Van Wyk, the better.

My brother, just admit that you are obsessed with chiefs because you comment more about them than you do Pirates. Inside you are a real Khosi, your secret is safe with me.

Though they were trashed by Sweden, there was some positiveness in their play, the future looks great, considering it was their first time in that stage, and playing with number 4 team in the world rankings! I very proud with the gals! Good luck for the future!

Our team was struck by stage fright. I liked Watching Portia, Sister and our striker Mngcoyi as they played exceptionally well. Our captain want to do simple things hard for herself, Mpumi Nyandeni has changed her style of play and I don't favour her new style. Overall the girls weren't too bad, and I think they will win against Canada!!! Just look how Our other African were beaten by Brazil!!!

what are the credentials of Mkhonza and what has he achieved to deserve to coach a national side.

as long as people are not appointed on merit in this country then this disaster will continue.

Banyana lack structural discipline and tactical awareness. These are things u dont learn just because u played soccer or u are politically connected.

@Super

I have to agree, Amanda Sister was our best player on the day. Well timed tackles. Now, let's work on the other defenders, she can't do this on her own.

We were just outplayed......had it not been of the brave keeper,we wld have conceaded 8. Tactically we were no match for them. Most of those Swedes girls can easly secure contracts in our psl clubs. There is nothing Mkhonza could have done. maybe FIFA shld allow African teams to field 13 players to make the game a little bit competitive or introduce the throwing of towel like in boxing.
