Masinga: Bucs’ domination under threat

Phil Masinga says Orlando Pirates could struggle this season

Former Bafana Bafana striker Phil Masinga says Orlando Pirates will find it harder to maintain their stranglehold on South African football during the 2012/13 season.

The Buccaneers have dominated the local scene in the past two years, winning six of the eight trophies on offer, but ‘Chippa’ says the quality of players being signed by Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and also Bidvest Wits makes these three teams capable of breaking that strangehold.

Chiefs recently completed the acquisition of striker Kingston Nkhatha from Black Leopards, having already bolstered their side with the likes of Bafana defensive trio Morgan Gould, Erick Mathoho and Siboniso Gaxa.

Sundowns have also roped in talented players in the form of Edward Manqele and Eleazar Rodgers, while the presence of Matthew Pattison, Tinashe Nengomasha and Aaron Mokoena also makes Wits a formidable force.

“It will be hard for Pirates to retain all their titles this season,” Masinga tells KickOff.com.

“Their domination of local football is actually under threat because Chiefs, Sundowns and Wits are making their presence felt in the transfer market by buying quality players. This will have the effect of improving their chances of doing well.

“If you remember, Sundowns started their League campaign on a high note last season, but failed to maintain their consistency. They will need to continue winning matches during the upcoming season and this will give them a good chance. Don't forget Bidvest Wits; they are likely to be the surprise team this season.”

The former Leeds United striker says Pirates would be weakened by the anticipated departure of midfielder Andile Jali, who has attracted interest from English sides.

“They [Pirates] must try to keep as many of their key players with the team as possible because they have already lost the likes of Isaac Chansa,” he adds. “The upcoming season is going to be a very interesting contest.”
