Musona: I quit

Knowledge Musona has quit the Zimbabwe national team

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Knowledge Musona has quit the Zimbabwe national team.

The Germany-based forward says he will no longer be available for national duty after Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) chief executive officer Jonathan Mashingaidze suggested he was involved in match fixing related to the Warriors' 2014 World Cup qualifying matches against Guinea and Mozambique.

Mashingaidze said he had spotted Musona together with Ovidy Karuru, Thomas Sweswe and Jimmy Jambo at the business premises of Henrietta Rushwaya – the alleged mastermind of the Asiagate match-fixing scandal.

Sweswe and Jambo are currently serving an indefinite suspension from the Warriors for their alleged involvement in the match-fixing scandal.

In a heavily worded letter to Mashingaidze yesterday, Musona expressed his concern at being implicated in damaging match fixing allegations.

In the letter, Musona – though his lawyer Misheck Hogwe – sets conditions for his return to the national team, which include an unreserved apology from Zifa.

"Meanwhile, our client has instructed us to advise your good office that he shall NOT be available for selection for duty with the Warriors pending ‘investigations'," reads part of Musona's letter.

"In the event that our client is cleared by any investigation (s), he would only be available for national duty on the following conditions:

1. That your good office proffers an unequivocal apology and ensures that such apology is given equal or better prominence in the media.

2. That your good office communicates in writing with Fifa confirming our client's clearance and furnish us with a copy of such communication."

Musona says Zifa could have at least given him a chance to Mashingaidze's claims before going public with allegations that have the potential to damage his football career.

Mashingaidze has confirmed receiving Musona's letter.
