Confusion reigned as Chiefs unveiled Tower’s number 3 jersey as it was assumed the player has finally signed, but Chiefs then clarified that they are still working on the deal, much to everyone’s dismay.
KickOff.com later approached Motaung to explain why the club jumped the gun.
“Look, I’m not gonna go into the details, but as I said we are working 24/7 on the deal. We are making sure that he will be at Kaizer Chiefs [next season],” she says.
“Celtic have allowed us to talk to the player and the player wants to be at Chiefs. We have agreed terms with the player, but we still have a few things to finalise,” Motaung continues, refusing to shed light on what exactly is pending to conclude the deal.
Chiefs’ marketing director says unveiling Mathoho’s jersey is Chiefs’ way of showing their intentions.
“It was to show our intention even further. We were not revealing the player, but we were putting it to the universe that this is what we want. Work is being done to make sure he is part of the Chiefs fold,” she adds.
However, Chiefs did in the past unveil players such as Siphelele Mthembu and Papi Zothwane, but both never played for the club. However, Motaung insisted that Chiefs are not in the Mathoho race to fail.
“I don’t think we are out there to fail … If we didn’t feel this is possible, the player wouldn’t even have come for a medical,” she concludes.
However, Motaung could not explain the hold-up in terms of finalising the deal and gave no time frame as to when Chiefs expect to conclude the negotiations with Celtic.
