Sail apologise for Vodacom Challenge decision

Posted: 19 June 2012 Time: 12:56 pm

Tournament promoters Sail have come out in defence of their decision to cancel this year's Vodacom Challenge.

English Premiership side Newcastle United and Congolese giants TP Mazembe were the two sides tabled to face Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, but apparently had not signed their contracts, leading to Sail's decision to call off the tournament.

In a media release Sail explain that the "decision was based on a number of influencing factors including failure to reach agreements with various parties."

Vodacom marketing executive Enzo Scarcella says Vodacom support the decision, while tournament promoter, Jabu Mathibela of Sail, explains the reasoning behind the decision.

"Due to time constraints we felt that at this late stage of the season we would not have done the tournament any justice," Mathibela says.

"We pride ourselves on operational excellence and the limited time frames would have compromised the quality of the product which South Africans have grown to know and love.

"Sail has always been committed to delivering a great soccer experience to the fans and we are continuing with this in 2013. We apologise to all of our Vodacom Challenge fans."

If it was Safa doing this,we could have got a lot of negative comments, yet ppl feel they are entitled to Safa but don't support its ventures-i.e attending games.

i'm happy abt this. this "Vodacom Challenge" always gives other teams inside's to both chiefs and Pirates and by the time the league starts these players are tired, hence u see Pirates always starts Bad and Chiefs does well in these games, but fail to perform when the league starts. good reddance to bad challenge.

Why not try and replace them with local sides like Sundowns, Swallows,SSU or Ajax????

Chiefs and Pirates you owe the whole PSL after you terminated the Telkom Charity Cup...

Dont worry this tournamet has a few fans, you do not have to apologise, just take that rubish and throw it in the sea in Durban and then you can go home and shut up (General's voice)

I guess you only started negotiating with the parties involved at the wee hours....that Is plain incompetency if you ask me as if you started the contract negotiations on time...you would have found other alternatives to carry on with the tournament.

Seem like this is not just the SAFA disease!

You people suck…you have lead the supporters down with your SWAK NEGOTIATIONS SKILLS.

I think everything boil down to the three year renewal with a lot of money so they were looking more as well

UNQUALIFIED COACH, you are misled and wrong! Chiefs is buying "any moving thing" because they stole R65million from charity last year. On 28 July 2012, they will get another instalment of R65million. They mentioned one billion sponsorship to mislead people like you and hide this R65million theft. They cancel Telkom Charity Cup to bail out Chiefs from liquidation.
