Mashaba: There’s no pressure

Free State Stars midfielder Mzikayise Mashaba eyeing more Bafana caps

Posted: 18 June 2012 Time: 10:52 am

Free State Stars midfielder Mzikayise Mashaba says he will not put himself under any added pressure following his breakthrough performance for Bafana Bafana against Gabon on Friday night.

The 23-year-old had a great season with Free State Stars and was nominated for the Nedbank Cup Young Player of the Tournament. It led to a Bafana call-up, which culminated in him scoring the final goal in the 3-0 win.

“It was great to score, but the most important thing is that I was given a chance to play and I’m thankful for that,” Mashaba tells KickOff.com.

“At training I was combining very well with ‘TK’ [Tokelo Rantie] and [Thulani] Serero and it didn’t come as surprise when we combined well during the match. I’m looking forward to getting more opportunities to play for the national team.

“But there’s no pressure … if I’m called up then I will give 100 percent; if not I will continue doing well for my club.”

Like his teammate Edward Manqele, who is on the radar of many PSL clubs, Mashaba is in no denial that playing for the national team will attract the interest of bigger clubs.

“That is pretty much obvious and there’s no player who doesn’t want to play for bigger teams. We all want to improve our lives. But that’s not up to me; I have a contract with Free State Stars until 2014 and any club that wants me will have to contact my club.” Follow me on Twitter @ZolaDoda

ag after 2 games and Kompela has shown how unethical he is.

The reason for fielding this boy was to attract the big 3 and up his value. I would be supriced if the owner of FSS made that call.

Steve Kompela must stay as far away from BB as possible.

he is a good player that still has a lot to learn. I was happy for him when he scored the goal but also wondered "why he used the let leg (the direction where the ball was coming from) to score when the right leg would have been appropriate?"

He scored & he is not to be blamed but I have witnessed this amateurish behaviour causing our teams clear-cut opportunities. Being 1 legged should not mean using it unneccesarily like Shabba. Another leg must be trained to do the basics not just used for walking.

Ppl of Mzansi are not apprceciative of their own players. I mean the boy made his debut and scored a goal, of whcih that we have always been complaining about. Boy keep ur foot down and do wat u do best that is contributing to the good cause of the team. Never listen to some of the idiots who comment here. Fuck when will we ever appreciat what we have??? Its annoying people, lets all grow up.

Mashaba was skinned against Botswana and scored a goal against an understrength Gabon, now is the best thing ever. How typical of SA fans.

King, I agree with you 100%. We don't need bias, unethical people in the national team.

Its always a case here in SA, when a coach takes over @Bafana he brings his own players frm his club to raise his pricetag 'n attract bigger teams. If u don't blv me check what J Sono, T Moloto 'n P Mosimane did.

Mashaba will fit very well at Naturena since our current left wing is Shaba, he will ensure that the is good competition in the team. We need players to fight for that starting line.Black and Gold kuze kulamule i godi.

Keep up the good work boy, don't rush to leave stars however should any team come with a better deal take it. You will definitely fit into any one of the top teams in the country. Stay grounded.

@Mgugudi

The point you are making is valuabale but at the same time you need to take into consideration the type of development structures we have in our country, most of players who are playing in the PSL have never recieved the technical and tactical training received by young players in European countries.

Up until grass root level training is not done correctly we are still going to see a lot of single footed players in this country. Black n Gold kuze kulamule i Godi.

to face the truth the boy did well, and he is promising.to me it doesnt matter that komphela introduce the boy in the game as a favourist,i saw the qualities of mashaba..bra if u keep on fighting for your own country then we'll have players 2 lift bafana bafana and definately qualify 2 brasil.
