The 31-year-old defender, South Africa’s most capped international, will leave cash-strapped English side Portsmouth, having also played for Ajax Amsterdam and Blackburn Rovers.
“Various clubs wanted to talk to him but Aaron is very interested in getting back and being part of the exciting project at Wits,” agent Paul Mitchell of Siyavuma Sports tells BBC Sport.
“Everything is agreed in principle so it's just a matter of sorting things out with Portsmouth.”
Mokoena becomes the second high-profile player to return to South Africa, with Benni McCarthy having been a revelation at Orlando Pirates.
