Nigeria beat Rwanda in 2013 African Nations Cup qualifiers

Posted: 16 June 2012 Time: 07:48 pm

Ike Uche and Ahmed Musa goals either side of the break handed Nigeria a two-goal win and progress to the final round of the 2013 African Nations Cup qualifiers.

Uche fired in from inside the box after Rwanda failed to deal properly with a corner kick, and Musa hooked in a volley from Uche Kalu's knockdown.   The win gives the Eagles a 2-0 aggregate win after they came away from Rwanda with a 0-0 result in the first leg.   In truth though, the Super Eagles will need to step it up for the final round when they confront one of the 16 teams that made it to the 2012 edition.   While they kept control of the game for most of the game, their passing still fell below expectation, and coordination could have been better.   But nerves were eased early on when the ubiquitous Uche opened the score after just 9 minutes.   The Spain-based striker picked up the ball just inside the area as Rwanda dallied to clear a corner kick and fired between the legs of one defender.   But the score was a dangerous one, as Rwanda only needed a goal to make Nigeria nervous. However, they failed to get it and were punished by Musa four minutes shy of the hour mark.   Kalu knocked down the ball under pressure from a defender, and the CSKA man took it on the half volley with his left foot.   Despite needing to get back into it, Rwanda only fashioned two good opportunities. Meddie Kagere forced a superb stop from Vincent Enyeama, then saw a free header come off the crossbar.   In the end, the super Eagles held on to progress.

Not a bad result but it have been better. To be honest I don't see us going far. Way forward bring Amodu back as technical director. His input might make all the difference.

Those words are clear reminders that the era of heart attack football is very much with us. But, this is a nation of 160 million people brimming with sumptuous football talents. What a shame!

@billion:

We could have done better with Siasia as the Coach while Keshi becomes the Technical Director.

Sometimes winning a game is not just enough and today's match justifies that. Even though we won today, but Nigerian fans are dissatisfied because of the poor performance which will lead to another disaster if the right thing is not done now. In my honest opinion, i think Keshi hasn't started the rebuilding process yet cos it was so evident in today's match. It was a terrible win.

Well done Super Eagles and Super Falcons for making our weekend a delightful one.

The true test for Keshi will be the next round of the qualifications. I hope he wont make the mistake of inviting Osaze Odemongie, i'm sure he is aware of how Osaze sent Siasia out.

Congratulations Super Eagles! You are getting truly super with every match. I wanted you to make it Nigeria: 7 Rwanda:0, but 2:0 is OK all the same. Well done! You however need to step up the game when you meet the big boys in the final round.
