Nyandoro switches to central defence

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Esrom Nyandoro used in central defence for Zimbabwe

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Esrom Nyandoro is being used in central defence for Zimbabwe so he can "marshal the backline" against Burundi this weekend in an attempt to qualify for Afcon 2013 in South Africa.

Nyandoro was called back into the national team with the aim to help bring through some of the younger generation.   "I was called back in to help guide the likes of (Knowledge) Musona and (Khama) Billiat. Then I was asked to play in defence and to talk to the younger players, which is fine," Nyandoro says.   "I actually used to play in this role many years ago," Nyandoro laughed, with a touch of confidence.   "I think our youngsters are doing well, but we just have not been converting our chances.   "We lost against Guinea even though we created several scoring chances. It was exactly the same this past weekend (0-0 draw with Mozambique).   "I see my role as a really nice challenge and when the coach (Norman Mapeza) asked me to play in defence I said ‘fine, no problem'. We hope to qualify for the Nations Cup in South Africa."   Nyandoro is the most capped player in his current national team followed by Tinashe Nengomasha and then Tapuwa Kapini.   He will be back with Sundowns on July 9 for pre-season training.   Follow on twitter @neilgreigsoccer

Esrom is complete footballer, just like his team-mate Surprise 'Modimowabolo' who is the only infield player in the Psl with a clean sheet at goals. mh.

Why is he picking on Musona & Billiat as if they're newcomers.

The problem in Africa is we delay talent till over 25 & when you have players like the above 2, we shouldn't say they are being guided.

Wayne Rooney has been England no 1 striker way b4 their age.So is Messi(ARG),Benzema(France),Balloteli(Italy),R7 & others.

OK fine, if you grew up together where are you now? What have you achieved? So you are telling me that at 42 you have no proper employment, you hopping from one interent cafe to the the next checking what Esrom is doing? You certainly have a vested interest in Nyandoro. For your info, Esrom is not gay, and he is a married father, so try your luck with people like Vuyo Mere.

Anyway thanks for telling us that you grew with Esrom - we though he grew up alone.

@Total Football......He played in goals once after our keeper had been red-carded, and kept a clean sheet.
