Bafana squad reduced for Gabon friendly

Bafana Bafana squad reduced for Gabon friendly

Posted: 11 June 2012 Time: 08:25 pm

Bafana Bafana caretaker coach Steve Komphela has released five players from the squad that will face Gabon in an international friendly on Friday.

The clash will take place at the Mbombela Stadium and Kicks off at 20h30.   Captain Steven Pienaar, striker Katlego Mphela, midfielders Oupa Manyisa and Thanduyise Khuboni as well as defender Bongani Khumalo have all been allowed to go home.   The players left after the squad’s training session on Monday evening.   "We are left with one match, having played two already. Initially we called-up a big squad because we had three back to back clashes and wanted to have cover in various positions in case of injuries. We have seen what the five that we released can give us, and now this is a chance to have a look at other players," said Komphela.   "At the same time we also had to reserve some respect to the opposition and not make wholesale changes to our squad. We still need continuity and we believe the players that are remaining will provide the needed balance to tackle Gabon on Friday."   Bafana departs for Nelspruit on Thursday.   The full Bafana Bafana squad to face Gabon:   GOALKEEPERS: Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), Wayne Sandilands (Mamelodi Sundowns),  Darren Keet (KV Kortrijk FC, Belgium)   DEFENDERS: Morgan Gould (Kaizer Chiefs), Erick Mathoho (Bloemfontein Celtic), Punch Masenamela (Mamelodi Sundowns), Anele Ngcongca (Racing Genk FC, Belgium), Siboniso Gaxa (Kaizer Chiefs), Siyanda Xulu (Mamelodi Sundowns)   MIDFIELDERS: Siphiwe Tshabalala (Kaizer Chiefs), Reneilwe Letsholonyane (Kaizer Chiefs), Teko Modise (Mamelodi Sundowns), Lebohang Mokoena (Mamelodi Sundowns), Andile Jali (Orlando Pirates), May Mahlangu (Helsingborg FC, Sweden), Thulani Serero (Ajax Amsterdam, Netherlands), Mzikayise Mashaba (Free State Stars)    STRIKERS: Siyabonga Nomvete (Moroka Swallows), Tokelo Rantie (Orlando Pirates), Eleazar Rodgers (Santos), Lehlohonolo Majoro (Kaizer Chiefs)     Gabon is expected in Nelspruit on Wednesday.   The full Gabon squad: Didier Ewono Ebang, Anthony Mfa Mezui, Emmanuel Ndong Mba, Edmond Mouele, Ecuele Manga, Remy Ebanega Ekwa, Henry-Junior Ndong, Stevvy Nzambe, Charly Moussono, Merlin KoumbaTadjigora, Cedric Boussougou Moubikou, Franck Engonga Obame, Robert Nsimbi, Alexandra Ndoumbou, Guelor Kanga, Levy Madinda, Landy Jerry Obiang Obiang, Branger Engone, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Judex Soumouna Lipoukou, Romaric Rogombe, Allen Nono, Axel Meye Me Ndong, Romuald Ntsitsigui    Coach: Paolo Duarte

Watching Ukraine holding their own against Sweden with nothing but sheer determination, zeal and ofcourse the brilliance of one Shevchenko, it leaves one wondering what the hell we're doing in international football without our one and only star, Benni McCarthy.

Jy weet, small footballing nations like ourselves should treasure their icons to the benefit of the country i.e. (Shev, Ukraine)(Ibra, Swedes)(R. Keane, Ireland)e.t.c......whether they truly are old, extra-large, and/or downright fat and slow...it still does'nt change the fact that they've got the 'it' factor, which I'm afraid the same cannever be said with any individual within the current bunch of 'ordinary people' we call players.

Let's unleash Benni and swallow our pride, we just do'nt have anybody else special.

Why is Bafana not playing in Jozi anymore or is it a case of SAFA knowing dat Gauteng people knows da difference between soccer and da kak displayed by Bafana these days ?

@Sweyts your analysis are great and sound, but the only difference between the aforementioned international icons and one spoilt brat Benny McCarthy is they don't act as if they own their individual football associations. McCarthy thinks he is a SAcan football god and he can do as he pleases, we rather be beaten with other players than be taken for a ride

The last time when Domkat announced his retirement from the national team Makakaniya praised him and even suggested that the whole of 2nd star fc players must quit Bafana Bafana because they are too good to warm the bench, now Steve did what they wished for by sending Mpandlane Manyisa packing and still the very same attention seeking a.s.s.h.o.l.e.s are complaining about Manyisa's exclusion from the camp. Why don't you ask 2nd star fc' spokesperson/player-coach/player-chairman/player-scout/player-advicer aka Bunny Mcdonald to advice Manyisa and Jali to retire from our national team?
