After a drug test by the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport on December 21, Thebakang was banned for three months, the suspension coming into effect early this year.
Stars also held an internal disciplinary hearing and suspended the player for the rest of the season.
Stars general manager Jason Raine confirms that Thebakang will return to pre-season training at the end of the month, allaying fears that the 24-year-old's contract had been terminated.
"He will be back with us in the new season as he is still under contract. In fact he did train with us towards the end of the season, even though he was still under suspension," Raine says.
"We as a club had suspended him before his suspension from the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport came into effect. So with both bans having now been lifted he returns to the club."
Traces of marijuana were found following the tests, although Thebakang insisted he was merely smoking a hubbly bubbly pipe – usually just tabacco – with friends.
Mbulelo Mabizela, Sailor Tshabalala and Philani Shange have been banned for the same offence in recent years.
