Mthetho to ref Cup Final

Xolile Mthetho will take charge of Saturday’s Nedbank Cup final

Posted: 25 May 2012 Time: 06:39 pm

Xolile Mthetho is the surprise appointment to take charge of Saturday’s Nedbank Cup final between Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United at the Orlando Stadium.

It is the first final for the East London-based official but comes despite few glowing reports for him in the just finished Absa Premiership season.   Mthetho has also earned himself the tag of the ‘new hanging judge’ after handing out more yellow cards than any other officials this season.   He averages more than five cautions per game, much more than the overall average of around four per game in both the Premier Soccer League and National First Division.   The identity of the referee is usually kept a secret by the Premier Soccer League, even for a major cup final which is regarded as a pinnacle of a match officials' career.   In all mature football leagues, the identity of the cup referee is released days before the game to allow for pre-match publicity but the PSL is still not confident enough in its clubs that they will not make attempts to influence the referee on the eve of the game.

Kick off should have kept this a secret. Now that it has been released so early, its obvious the ref will be under pressure and as we know all those unused monies from BEE mines they may be used on this unexperienced ref.Shame SSU.

If it was Pirates involved Jerome was going to officiate, I knew in deciding game in Durban it was going to be Damon and should they not score legitimate goal, he was going to give Pirates a penalty, watch close next season Pirates and Damon...Khosi4Life

Screw all the "mature football leagues" they can do whatever they want, we are under no obligation to follow. Keep the ref a secret please PSL.
