Sundowns slip up again

Posted: 4 April 2012 Time: 21:18

Mamelodi Sundowns suffered yet another setback in their title chase following a goalless draw at home to Golden Arrows on Wednesday evening.

It was a game where the league leaders will rue their missed opportunities in front of goal.

Arrows were virtually non-existent in the match as they struggled to break down a resolute Brazilians defence and had to resort to shooting from distance.

We only had to wait two minutes for the first attempt on goal when Arrows’ Katlego Mashego narrowly missed the target from 20 yards out.

Following that early attempt on goal though, it was all Downs and they should have taken the lead in the 21st minute. Antony Laffor’s corner found Nyasha Mushekwi unmarked inside the box, but he headed the ball onto the crossbar from six yards out.

Four minutes later and Mushekiwi had another chance to score, but again he wasted his opportunity, heading the ball wide after meeting a Punch Masenamela cross.

The second half was the same old story as Downs pushed forward, but couldn’t find the right finish in the final third of the field.

In the 63rd minute the home side hit the crossbar for the second time when Hlompo Kekana latched onto a poor clearance, driving a 25 yard shot onto the woodwork.

Eight minutes from time and Surprise Moriri had a great chance to steal the victory, but much like his compatriots his radar was off, heading a Doctor Mampuru cross wide from six yards out.

The game ended 0-0 and Downs will rue their missed chances which now sees them tied on points with Pirates at the top of the table, though they have the superior goal-difference.
