SuperSport United have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Nedbank Cup after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over National First Division side United FC in Kimberley on Sunday afternoon.
The only goal of the game was scored by Ashley Hartog in the first half.
But it was not all smiles for Hunt’s men on the day as his side was reduced to ten men after John Arwuah was shown a straight red card in the second half.
Also, despite their dominance on the day in terms of the possession stakes and controlling the flow of the game, SuperSport still struggled to find the back of the net after creating numerous chances on goal.
For United Fc, they were virtually non-existent and rarely threatened the SuperSport goal, even when they were a man up.
The first chance of the match came in the eighth minute when Sibusiso Zuma brought the best out of the home side’s goalkeeper.
Zuma let fly with a powerful 20-yard shot which was brilliantly saved by Nimrode Tsengwa diving low to his left to palm the effort away.
Tsengwa was called into action again in the 21st minute, this time producing a fantastic reflex save tipping a stinging 18-yard thunderbolt from Thabios Nokane over the crossbar.
SuperSport did make their pressure pay in the 35th minute when some slick work down the left flank saw Tebogo Langerman deliver an accurate cross into the box to find Hartog who made no mistake with a clinical header to give his side the lead, 1-0.
The second half saw the Matsatsantsa continue to control the game and they should really have doubled their lead in the 61st minute.
A mistake in defence by United FC allowed Langerman to sneak behind the back four. But with only the keeper to beat, he squandered a glorious chance firing high over the bar.
Three minutes later, though, and SuperSport were reduced to ten men after a dangerous tackle from John Arwuah on Kanona saw the SuperSport man sent form the field.
Still, despite going a man down Hunt’s men never really looked like conceding and held on for a comfortable win.
