Wits slump to third straight loss

Posted: 28 March 2012 Time: 21:39

Bidvest Wits slumped to a third straight defeat in the Premiership on Wednesday evening, going down 1-0 at the hands of relegation-threatened Jomo Cosmos.

It is a seventh successive League match without a win for Roger de Sa's team, who have slipped down the standings in recent weeks and will continue to do so until they can arrest their ailing form.

As for Ezenkosi, it is just their second win of the League season (their first away from home), as well as a crucial three points in their attempt to avoid relegation from the top flight for a third successive time.

Wits created the better scoring chances in the first half and perhaps should have taken the lead as early as the fourth minute when youngsters Asive Langwe and Letsie Koapeng combined to set up the latter with a shooting opportunity from 12 yards out, but the forward sent his effort wide of the target.

The Clever Boys' next big opportunity arrived in the 37th minute. Langwe tried his hand from long range with a superbly hit shot that forced Avril Phali into an excellent save. The subsequent corner saw a free header from Mbulelo Mabizela, but once again Phali was on hand to keep the score line blank.

Cosmos showed more impetus in attack in the early minutes of the second half, but again it was Wits who nearly broke the deadlock when Bhongolwethu Jayiya let fly from 20 metres out only to see the ball flash just wide of goal.

A minute before the hour mark Ezenkosi had their first real chance to open the scoring, but striker Siyabonga Nonthinga shot over the crossbar from 18 yards out, leaving Emille Baron still awaiting his first significant involvement of the game.

As it turned out, the Wits goalkeeper was picking the ball out the back of his net two minutes later, as the visitors scored against the run of play when Matthew Rusike turned home a low cross from former Wits midfielder Mark Haskins; Cosmos were 1-0 up and headed for a rare win.

Cosmos almost doubled their lead on 69 minutes, as a corner kick from substitute Katleho Loke found the head of Elhadji Samb, but the Senegalese defender put his effort over the crossbar. Luckily the visitors did not need a second goal to secure all three points.

Wits' only real effort to equalise in the dying minutes was a long range strike from Enrico Adolph that was easily handled by Phali.

Well done to my team on the win- life at the bottom of the PSL is getting tough. If we could only get 20 points in the remaining games.

Well done boys!

Shocking that we let players go and they come back to win man of the match against us! what is more shocking is that we lend out quality players like Haskins who probably scored more goals than any of our current mid-fielders in the game times he had!
