Arrows bring Leopards down to earth

Posted: 7 March 2012 Time: 20:10

Golden Arrows beat Black Leopards 4-2 in a League clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Dillon Sheppard, Collins Mbesuma, Thamsanqa Gabuza and Philani Shange found the back of the net for Arrows, while Leopards replied through Mongezi Bobe and Luyolo Mapholisa.

The home side got off to a great start when they opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Siyabonga Nkosi’s through-pass released Dillon Sheppard on the left and the left winger placed his low shot at the far post.

Muhsin Ertugral’s men should’ve doubled their lead a minute later when Sheppard delivered a cross from the left wing, but Collins Mbesuma’s bouncing header went straight to Leopards goalkeeper Thabang Maluleke.

Nkosi had two good chances to extend the home side’s advantage, but he shot over the crossbar yet again in the 30th minute and sent another effort wide two minutes later after receiving a cross from Sheppard.

Arrows wasted yet another chance in the 40th minute when Nkosi found himself with space on the right, but his low cross went behind both Mbesuma and Sheppard in the penalty area.

They were punished a minute later when Leopards found the equalizer against the run of play with Kingston Nkhatha delivering a cross from the left for captain Bobe to place his header beyond Petim’s reach, 1-1.

The visitors came back from the break with renewed confidence and came close to taking the lead in the 48th minute when Nkhatha connected with a corner from Bobe at the near post, but his header went narrowly over the crossbar.

However, it was Arrows who added to their tally two minutes later when Sheppard broke free on the left a sent in a low cross for Mbesuma to nudge into the back of the net, 2-1.

The goal spurred the home side on and they quickly added another in the 59th minute when Shange sent in a cross from the left for substitute Gabuza to finish with a left-footed volley, 3-1.

Then Shange turned from provider to scorer four minutes later when he rifled a low shot home after Tom’s shot had rebounded off the upright, 4-1.

The home side had another opportunity in the 82nd minute when Leopards goalkeeper Maluleke rushed out of the penalty area and lost out to Gabuza who then crosses for Sibusiso Hadebe, but the substitute missed the ball completely as he tried to shoot.

The visitors then scored another goal against the run of play three minutes before time when Luyolo Mapholisa drilled a shot from long range into the top right corner, 4-2.

However, it was too little too late as Arrows managed to hold on for maximum points.
