Jomo Sono explains Teko Modise situation

'Bra J' sets the record straight

Posted: 2012-02-21 10:59

South African football great Jomo Sono has shed light on the issue of the number 10 jersey involving Teko Modise.

Initially, as reflected on a KickOff.com report on Monday, it was purported that ‘Bra J’ was identifying 'The Navigator' as his successor to the South Africa's best number 10, but Sono has set the record straight.

“Teko was honouring me as the best number 10 [ever] in the country,” Sono confirms.
The ‘Troublemaker’ says he wasn’t surprised by Modise’s honour, because the latter is an “honest” person.

“I feel good that he honoured me. I feel great and I was humbled for him to honour me. I think that’s why he’s been a success in football, because he is honest,” Sono adds.

KickOff.com also spoke to Modise’s business manager Jazzman Mahlakgane, who provided more information on the matter.

“Jomo was also honouring Teko, that’s why Teko received a signed Sundowns yellow jersey from Jomo,” Mahlakgane says.

For his part, Modise reveals in a declaration message that he accepted the number 10 jersey at Sundowns in honour of Sono.

Teko says: “I, Tsholofelo Teko Modise, has accepted jersey no 10 from my team Mamelodi Sundowns in honour and recognition of Ephraim Jomo Sono.”

Now it's starting to sound a lil' crazy....why would Teko honour Jomo with a Downs jersey or vice-versa? That should've happened at Pirates mos?

Anyway I thought Bra. J for a change gave back to the game, kuphi khona, he still beleives he's the greatest just like Pele who still considers himself a player. Lol. Oldies!

Dear KickOff

I would really appreciate if you could take responsibility and come back to us with a response .

1st : On Saturday you posted an article about Pirates and confirming that it will be televised(live), you even quoted SABC boss confirming that .
Unfortunately the match wasn’t televised …..would you please take responsibility and respond .

2nd: Yesterday you posted an article about Jomo Sono honouring Teko Modise ….
KICKOFF: Prior to Mamelodi Sundowns’ game against Jomo Cosmos at Loftus Stadium yesterday, Jomo Sono honoured Modise by handing over a signed jersey – seemingly identifying 'The Navigator' as his successor to the South Africa's best number 10.

This morning I read a newspaper(Sowetan) and it says Teko honours Jomo
Sundowns' captain and playmaker, Teko Modise, took the opportunity to honour the opposition's chairman and coach, Jomo Sono, as the best number 10 ever in Mzansi.
He presented the Cosmos mentor with his autographed number 10 jersey.

Kickoff…why ? why ? what’s wrong ? We’re not getting what we truly deserves here.
You need come up and say something about these things before it actually dent your credibility.

Gucci Man: 2012-02-21 11:27

KICKOFF, something doesn't make sense here

Was it a ceremony /giveaway/ or what ?
If Teko took number 10 jersey then all of sudden Bra J also wavundlula ijersey naye and hounored Teko ?

Confused !!!

Gucci Man: 2012-02-21 11:31

TTM, you know that we appreciate you and still now you're still the only jurno that communicate with us on line .

This article is confusing , how did Bra J knew that Teko was gonna give him the signed number 10 jersey(Sundowns) ?

TTM: 2012-02-21 11:40

@Sweyts:
I get your point.
Gucci Man:
Yesterday's story on Teko was based on what we were told by his agent. Secondly, we didn't err on the SABC story. We got it right, but unfortunately Kaizer Kganyago now refuses to take our calls to explain exactly what happened. I gave him a call on Saturday after a number of readers queried whether the Pirates match would be live and he told me it was going to be live and I asked him, "What time?" and he said "We are showing it live, whatever time it is playing". So as the spokesperson, I took his word for it. Gucci, it is heartbreaking for a Journalist when there is confusion surrounding a story he/she wrote. I feel the same. The reality now is Kaizer is not taking our calls - I called him no less than 20 times yesterday and today I have called about five times so I'm doing everything possible to get him to respond to why he misled us. The bottom line is KickOff.com truly respect its readers and we will never write anything out of line.

Wandile : 2012-02-21 11:43

Gucci Man, K.O has further dented its almost non-existant with a story of Julio Leal loosing the dressing. Even a Grade 8 student can come up with better lies. Never mind a first year journalism student.

Sad indeed. And all they need do is come up publicy and take ownership of their blunders. Their silence shows that these are/were not human error but a conscious efort to mislead the public with "news worthy" gibberish.

East Rand: 2012-02-21 11:45

Eish this story is as confusing as the Zim Asiagate saga. Eintlek who was honouring who here Miss Journalist? What I also want to know is whether all the players signed the jersey or was it only the "wanted" group and why would there be a celebration becoz Teko is wearing the no.10....... Eish Sundowns is really a tuckshop mara mxmmmm!!!!

Please tuu clarify i just want to know

Once and Always

I have told you guys before that Kickoff jounalist are drinking Mnike. @ Gucci man they don't even bother to appologise for the toilet they are busy writing here.

Wandile : 2012-02-21 11:50

@TTM
I just saw your post and thank for reverting to your readers. I retract my comments on the Bucs game issue. I don't fault on the Teko story cause it is an open secret that his agent Jazzman is always contrdicting himself. The Shabba saga for instance.

As for the Julio Leal, I still hold the prima facie view that it is lie until it can confirmed by a source at most.

Your response is noted and much appreciated.

@Tiyane

thanx to came back to us i was also confused especailly when i realised that pirates game will be delayed about 5 hrs late as Kickoff mention that it will be a live game, in future anything dat 's related to SABC espcially Mr kaizer "Generation" Kganyago don't even bother to bring it here at teamkickoff sites bcos this guy had never been so honest to us, i wonder if he 's honest to his wife.

TTM: 2012-02-21 12:07

What is the whole confusion with jersey numbers when we cant even qualify for cosafa... what is the jersey number going to achieve for us? No offence I am teko favourate but what transpired here is just a waste of space and time. We need honours and people exchange jersey as if our country is not on red alert mode- Mbalula declared martial law, but who listened, Zuma himself laughed the matter off in Parliament (anyway, I cant expect him to do much cause his scoring boots are directed somewhere)- so with respect Teko, we need footbal, not football affairs. What you and Jomo did was just to confirm that nobody in this country actually realises the magnitude of the football crisis in this country!

Masimba: 2012-02-21 12:36

You got to love this country, it seems all organs of life in SA are in tatters- from politics to entertainment, sometimes you even mistake politics for entertainment when hypocricy tolls up- as for sport and journalism, may I just shut up on these two? The whole culture of doing things is just not up to scratch_ blame it on democracy or history... I dont know, I wish I can; certainly I must blame someone... can't something just go well for once... what is this Kaizer Kganyago doing now? So like Safa, SABC is just an organ... what is nice is that nothing gets done and we will forget about everything tomorrow.

Donald Duck: 2012-02-21 12:47

Ag man, what de hell is going on here, who's honouring who?? anyway it doesn't matter, jomo will be relegated and sundowns will finish second behind kaizer chiefs.

And kick-off get ur story straight b4 swopping ur facts around on the site ok???? I will 4give u only this once.

Tebogo! : 2012-02-21 13:18

J. Sono will not succeed in life due to his self-centredness; he believes he is the most gifted individual in south africa whether as a coach, player, manager, chair etc.

In order to improve u need to accept that u need to improve! Jomo hasn't accepted that is y he is currently fighting relegation!

He will never honor anyone

Observant: 2012-02-21 13:25

It is this part "the best number 10 [ever] in the country” that has messed up our football. Remeber Clive Barker had plan with Bafana, gradually introducing young players such as Brian Baloyi, Benni McCarthy, Quinton Fortune et al.

This man, "the best number 10 [ever] in the country” came with his sick ideas and since that day he took over, we have never achieved anything because he came in with hiw own personal mission, and we still want to honour this man. This is the man who disrupted a winning formula, and replaced it with under achievers such as Andrew Rabutla.

I'm not surprised he's celebrating Teko, because he can she Teko poses no more threat of replacing him as the best ever, like he did with Theophelus "Doc" Khumalo, he hindered the man opportunities of achieving greater things. All he's concerend about is protecting his glory days from Pirates. Shallow self-centred grandpa!

Tebogo! : 2012-02-21 13:39

I think Teko's agent is an opportunist and will do anything to look good!

its clear with his comments that he want to mislead people that his client teko is the best thing pirates ever lost, he is turning the story to make people believe jomo thinks Teko is his preffered best number 10.

But by reports its clear Jomo would have accepted and signed te jersey from any player that wanna honour him whether its teko, yende, piennaar etc. And this tells me this was more of Jomo being the star of the show rather than what Jazzman want us to see (teko being the man of the moment)

So this was a celebration of Jomo being the best and teko looking up to him and being inspired by him, not the other way around!

Jazzman, you are so desperate my man, u like limelight! For your info, most ppl believe teko is a great footballer but it looks like u have doubts urself for putting up a show like this! Don't try hard man, we know what teko is capable of and we respect him as a player and a role model to young starts whether Jomo see it or not!

Lastly, I think what you did will definitely have bad consequences as this was a private matter between two footballers that didn't need psl or sundowns for that matter!

Teko pls be careful of being a self centred person, what you did is absolutely right but I don't think you did it for the purpose you want us to believe! And that really say a lot about u even though I blame Jazzman, not everything is about u Teko u have players, and a team to respect!

This was really out of line, I wouldn't be suprised if players come out and say u getting a special treatment at sundowns!

You need to consider other people when you make decisions like this!

My bro, I might not agree with you on a lot of subjects/points but i agree with you with the above view. It really is a crisis if in our beloved soccer mad nation the only newsworthy stories are people exchanging jerseys rather that on what we achieve as a nation on the field of play.

First Bafana and SAFA embarassed us in the international stage and then my team OPFC did the same. Hopefully they can bounce back. But we really need to look very hard in the mirror and see the flaws in out soccer admin and on the field

Jomo took Bafanabafana to Burkina faso when no one beleived that they will reach the final to defend the trophy away from home and they reaced the final with your Simon Gopane,Rabutla etc and since then,an overrated ex Chiefs coach (Ted)took Bafana to a competition where they couldn't even score a goal and you kept quite. Talking about black on black syndrome.

There is no story here. Old Rat Jomo and 'has been' Teko - in fact he is not a has been, he never was. Shoes was the best number 10 ever produced in this country. They concerted this story with the current Rat team in order to divert attention to the treason Pirates committed against the country. We need to know from SAFA and the government what fine are they going to hand to the Rats for humiliating and embarrassing us at PE on Sunday. As a tax paying citizen of this country I suggest that the Rats be recalled from the tournament to avoid further embarrassment and replace them with the Mighty Amakhosi. First it was Bafana Bafana, now Rats. Mbalula, here is work for you.

People_Lie: 2012-02-21 19:19

It is sad to see entire nation angry like this our standard of soccer can't be defined. To be fair to the gentlemen above Jomo deserves rescpect if you look at him as a player and coach they were just unfortunate we were banned they once hammered a team from agentina 6 1 a score bafana doesn't even target. With cosmos he always come back from lower division with emmediate effect I still say he could have won the leaque the time he sold Katongo mid season the man came to collect his award 6 months later agree on a glass Bells.

He plays for Sundowns its a team he just joined I don't know what's up with this number ten even 2 is a number I don't wanna judge him but I he should not forget that so far that form its not back and he was there because of the whole team suporting him well

Bafana realy Dissapointed the nation people are still hurting don't wanna comment on the pierats game I did not see that Kak
