KickOff.com’s Tiyani wa ka Mabasa pulls a ‘Paul the Octopus’ on us to predict the outcomes of the weekend PSL fixtures…
Kaizer Chiefs v Moroka Swallows
A psychological factor may come into play in this clash. Firstly, Chiefs have racked up 29 victories compared to 11 for the Birds, while 14 matches have been drawn in 54 meetings between the two sides so it goes without saying that Chiefs dominate this fixture and for some strange reason teams coached by Gordon Igesund, arguably the League’s most successful coach, always battle to beat Chiefs. In fact, Swallows have lost all their three last League meetings against Chiefs, including two under Igesund, so it is a psychological battle this for Igesund and his players.
Prediction: Chiefs win.
Free State Stars vs Amazulu
Stars have only lost once at home this season and that was to the log leaders, Sundowns. It is interesting to note too that ‘Ea Lla Koto’ beat ‘Usuthu’ 1-0 in Durban at the beginning of the season so Amazulu are on the back foot on this one.
Prediction: Stars win.
Golden Arrows v SuperSport United
Form is thrown out the window for this clash, because both teams haven’t won a match in the past four League matches so in other words these teams are on equal footing. My view is that Arrows have an edge since they are playing at home.
Prediction: Arrows win.
Santos v Bidvest Wits
Wits have lost just once away from home all season, picking up two wins and four draws in their seven matches on the road and they already beat Ajax Cape Town in November at the Cape Town stadium. Santos, on the other hand, have lost three times at home this season and compare that to last season, when they lost just twice in 15 matches at home. So they are certainly not the same side this season.
Prediction: Draw.
Mamelodi Sundowns v Jomo Cosmos
Cosmos may have drawn with Chiefs in midweek, but Sundowns are no doubt a much better team than Chiefs at the moment. I think Cosmos are still trying to find their feet at this stage, but unfortunately they are up against a team that is consistent.
Prediction: Sundowns win.
Maritzburg United v Ajax Cape Town
Ajax have won their previous four matches, while Maritzburg United have lost only once at home all season. It makes for an interesting battle and perhaps the one thing that separates the two sides is that Maritzburg are some sort of Ajax’s bogey team. To put it in context, since Maritzburg United made a return to the PSL in 2008/09, they haven’t lost to Ajax in a League match.
Prediction: Maritzburg United win.
