Franklin Cale did enough to salvage a point for SuperSport United, following an early breakthrough by Free State Stars.
Rudiger Gilbert scored for Stars on 16 minutes, before Cale got the equaliser just before half-time.
The home side took off into attack mode and won the first corner within four minutes. Cale sent an in-swinging ball into the box, but it was an easy take for Bruce Mtshali.
Despite the constant pressure from Matsatsantsa, it was the away side who struck first, when Paulus Masehe laid the ball on to Gilbert, who struck an effort from just outside the box, leaving Mtshali helpless.
Mashego took Ea Lla Koto's first corner of the game with an out-swinging effort from the right, but Morgan Gould calmly made the clearance.
As the first half neared a close, Mabhuti Khenyeza sent in a high cross for Cale, who headed home from the centre of the penalty area.
Just after the restart a corner from Mzikayise Mashaba forced Gould into an intercepting clearance, before a cross from Gilbert forced Ronwen Williams into a save.
Cale made way for Kermit Erasmus 63 minutes in, and Sibusiso Zuma was brought on in the 70th minute, but then play was stopped owing to a power failure at the stadium.
10 minutes before the full-time whistle Sameegh Doutie curled in a corner from right to meet Zuma's foot, which Mtshali punched away. Tebogo Langerman had a shot in the dying minutes, but it was not enough and the match ended level.
